End-September CAS Engagement

Date: 9/14/2020 ~ 9/25/2020

I am now half way though my first CAS Engagement, after doing some investigations about basketball on my spare time while ben thought with my friends during CAS Friday, I do learn lots of things. I have notice some changes of my body for example my hands were sour after we play basketball during CAS on friday which by my research is a sign of muscle growing. In addition to that fact of muscle growing, I had also learn to communicate more, and it’s quite funny from the reaction of my friends since I am the newbies and already ordering people around, but I am improving. As for the next two weeks, I will focus more on the playing time since I have already completed most of the research. The reason why I uses the word “most” is because there must be something that I still don’t know about basketball and I might need to do more research on it.

La Familia 1 – Wilson Chen

Por:Wilson Chen

¡Hola! Ella le gusta bebe Cafe y come pan. Mi hermana menor se llama Chloe, tango doce anos, Ella le gustan jugar football y jugar queso.

I, Wilson Chen, don’t have much interest other than drawing and playing video games which I get bored sometimes. I clean my room when I feel like it and I make my dinner sometimes when my parents are out. I was part of the HS TISSA Soccer team of year 19 ~ 20, which I would continue any work with soccer. I had my first piano and Violin lesson when I was in Kindergarten, which I had all start when I transfer to KAS in grade 5. One of the recent music activity I had his guitar lesson throughout grade 9 and it was for the pure needs of HS music class, since then till today I haven’t had a single music lesson not just because there is no class requirement, but for the sake of wasting my time. CAS stands for Creativity, Activity, and Service. From my perspective, I think I am a balanced and open-minded student because I do my homework accordingly to my schedule and plan out my activities before the week. I think being balanced is important when my IB program start since having good time management skill is a key to success to everything. One learner profile that I don’t have is Risk-taker, I am a coward who would like to see the result before even try, sometimes it makes me feel better just by watching others perform or talk about their goals, maybe thats why I hate responsibility. What I want to learn from this 2-year long program is Communicators (or the ability to communicate with others), talking is the most important way to communicate and if I don’t of the guts of talking with anyone just by thinking about the result I will receive is not okay. I need to understand the fact of loss and gain which is one important concept that I believe will help me in the future. Some goals I want to make for this program are do something new like start playing basketball, at least try, is popular for a reason. Or maybe walk out of my comfort zone.

About this Unit

During the summative for the ILOHL Unit, it was challenging in the field of discussion and interesting in the area of recording. I had learned a lot of important concepts during this unit by understanding the importance of giving example and proves to support my ideas during a debate, another is by understanding the best by recording even though it is not my first time using it already.

Progress vs Privacy – Tricking or lying to someone in order to achieve a goal – Wilson Chen

The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks, a story of pain and suffer, and a story of a victim that were trucked others fir their own benefit because of her human rights. In the sociality today, people lying to achieve a goal happens frequently. People often lied to others is because to protect themself or other, one of the example may be student telling it’s parents that he/she had completed the homework, by telling the parents the lie that he/she did completed the homework, student is now free (Do anything he/she wants) and complete the homework in his/her spare time. This is a simple lie, and it kind of similar with the case of Henrietta Lacks, is it really worth lying, think about the perspective of the student’s parents.

“There are two ways to be fooled. One is to believe what isn’t true; the other is to refuse to believe what is true.”
― Soren Kierkegaard

The quote by Soren Kierkegaard explains the truth that Every one of us lives in a lie, for example, the government. Our body would want to make it true but mind and body are never connected. In the story of Henrietta Lacks, who suffers pain, her body isn’t fighting the cancer cell-like what her minds do.

The last example is the definition of Joker. Everyone is like Joker, inside and outside are different. We always puts our benefit factor at the front. From inside point of view (Mental), some people is to get rich or be popular, some is to get into a good college. While the outside point of view may be Black and white, no future, hope. These two ideas often construct, and most of the time it only occur similar in a file or act. To conclude, we have human rights, we can be, do, whatever we want. But, is lying to others really helping you on the road of success?

Completing the Crucible

What I Learned:

During the Crucible unit, I learn about the Christian culture in the 16th century and how people were treated. This is the first time that I’ve been timed in summative which gave me lots of pressure but practice makes it stronger, with the understanding of sketch note, now I can use another way to take notes.

Unit 2 Reflection

Is Abigail innocent or not?

In the crucible, Auther Miller uses Abigale to represent the hate that would be tricky to know. In the Crucible, Abigail Williams is Parris’s Niece and Proctor’s affair, as the Niece of Parris she had to keep her reputation highly. Honestly speaking, Abigail has to be blamed for all the events because without her covering up for Parris, the story wouldn’t have ended like this. “We did dance, Uncle, and when you leaped out of the bush so suddenly, Betty was frightened and then she fainted. And there’s the whole of it” (9)

Abigail needs to be blamed for every event because she planed every event, for example, she made Marry Warren hide a needle in Elizebeth’s Doll which means she is not a victim in the story of Crucible since she has the power to control others.
People may argue that Abigail is forced to be the way she is like because of the lie she made at the beginning of the book, she was forced to continue to lie or else she would be hung like Proctor.

Word Count: 183

Who has the most power in Act 3?

At the end of act 3 when Abigail Williams won the court by her acting skills and Elizebeth just when everyone that Abigail had the most power, Danforth was sitting aside and laughing in the heart. Danforth is the judge of the court therefore he can decide how ever he wants as long as its reasons able. “No uncorrupted man may fear this court, Mr. Hale! None! To Giles: You are under arrest un contempt of this court. Now sit you down and take counsel with yourself, or you will be set in the jai until you decide to answer all questions.” (Danforth, 91) Judge always have the highest power maybe not in the supermarket but in the court, Danforth uses his power to push Files into jail. In the 16th century, judges jobs are more likely to control punishment and Danforth who is very religious would only believe in Abigale…

The truth of Marry Warren

Marry Warren, a slave, women with under the name of Abigale and a follower of witchcraft. In the Crucible Arthur Miller uses lots of quotes to slowly reveal the truth of Marry. This includes the time when Marry warren say to Proctor that she can help Elizabeth to prove her innocent of the toll, however, Marry give other answers in court. “No Sir” “Not Sure” (98, Marry). This is the Answer from Marry when Procter and Danforth asked her about what happened on that night, Marry can only follow Abigale’s instruction because she is also one of the ladies that went to the forest at the begging of the book.
(Marry is beside Abigale)

This reminds me of a quote by S.E. Hinton who wrote the book The Outsider,  “I lie to myself all the time. But I never believe me.”. In the book, lie was used very often by Hinton and lies are often explaining a situation. In the crucible, if Marry does not lie than Proctor would have killed her. She was finally lying again when Abigale Williams and others are in the curt that would protect her from Procter’s attack, until then she was unkillable that why she lies.

(Why People Lie | Kim Serota | TEDxOaklandUniversity)

To conclude, people lie when their life is being threatened. From the example of Marry Warren from the Crucible and Abigale Williams to the example from Hinton, I believe this information is good enough for me to state lies was made when lives are threatened. Arther Miller also gives more example in the book from other characters including Proctor and Giles, Elizabeth and Rebecca, however, they do not lie often, therefore, people does not have much prove to accuse them.

The frustration about blatant lies someone tells and everyone else believes – Wilson Chen

In the Crucible, Arthur Miller uses Abigale to present people would make lies to protect themself from reputation and witchcraft. Abigale had lie throughout the story, from the begin of the book when Abigale’s uncle Paris had caught Abigale dance and running around naked in the forest. Abigale begins to lie and try to stay as clean as possible, later when people are having a church, she and the other girl had to lie to protect themselves. This is nothing special, according to the articles form the ScienceDirect which stated “Lies are told for one of two reasons: either the deceptive person believes they have more to gain from lying than from telling the truth; or the deceptive person is incapable of discerning what the truth is, either temporarily or owing to some permanent mental defect. Lies may be divided into two distinct motivational categories: prosocial lies that are constructed to benefit others; and antisocial lies that are selfish.”

With the quotes from Abigale on page 11 “No one was naked! You mistake yourself, uncle (Parris)” Abigale. Another example “I told him everything; he knows now, he knows everything we.” This quote is a lie, Abigail wants to be safe and she is pushing the responsibility ty away, she wants Betty to stop acting. Even if it isn’t drama, she will make it as drama. The last example is “Oh, she’s only gone silly somehow.” This is just another example Arthur Miller shows Abigile or “Human”/Person would do anything to save their reputation.

To conclude, Arthur Miller had to use Abigile to show the truth of humanity. As one of the readers who knowns who brought Betty out to the forest to dance and sing. From the types of action of Lie that Abigail had made, this is a true example of Selfish lie.
