Mid – May CAS Engagement

One afternoon in the middle of May, I’ve made Green Bean Cakes at JZN Bakery as an activity. After some researches into the history of Green Bean Cake, I understand its purpose and its traditional values as a Han Bing Dessert. But when I start to make them, everything is different. The Green Bean Cake is unique in the way that its got different layers, but during the process of making them, all I do is mix two dolls which supposing should only give me two-layer of cake crust maximum. So I ask my advisor what is going on and learn some cool cooking concepts relating to sciences.

Due to the use of an ingredient of non-powdered butter, the structure would change (separate) once enter the oven because, without powder, the dolls get separated due to similar charges just like magnets that repel when the same charge is ner each other. Luckily for me, in my IB Physics SL Year 1 course, charges are something I am currently learning and after this experience, it gives me more image for me to understand the work force behind physics (forces). Also, it makes me think of the relationships between a chef and a scientist.

End – April CAS Engagement

On the beautiful Saturday of 4/24, I’ve attended the Han Bing Contest Finals (University Levels) at the awesome complex of Jiu Zhen Nan Han Pastry Cultural Concept Store. I’ve spent about 6 hours worth of Activity Time helping during the competition for example moving the chairs for the stagings and cleaning up the cafeteria after the judges and during this process, I use what I learn from my US history class last year about production line where people divide works into different stages and each person work different stages at the same time. After proposing this concept I have loads of positive feedback and it makes me and other workers/interns work less than before.

As I arrive home and begin reflecting on the speech given by the CEO of Jiu Zhen Nan about preserving traditions, I begin to wonder we (humans) use innovations to replace traditions but why come back to ancient. As I begin to think maybe now we have the technologies or knowledge to change the traditions in other words “Update” the traditions because some traditions may be required in our life. In Jiu Zhen Nan’s Case is the type of Han Bing (products) they keep for Young generations and traditional usage.

End December CAS Engagement

During the Winter Vacation, I have attended the Dentistry Association Internship activity where I provide services to people that comes to see the dentist. I spend a total of 41 hours in the clinics in addition to the extra 10 minutes of weekly reflections, this activity that I have accomplished is very important to me since communications are the basics of everything and it gives me chances to speak Chinese to strangers. But at the same time I also get to practice my time management skills, during the holiday I have to not only complete my assigned work in the clinic but also finish some of the remaining school works that were assigned at the end of last semester.

In addition to that, I’ve come up with a few sketches that would similarly guide my future designs and I come up with that decisions after research cases of car brands minimizing the cost of car production and if the car is base on another car but built differently, it would most likely to be shorter in development period and would be more competitive in the market. I think my strength in this field is the knowledge and interest that attracts me to follow the most recent news of the automotive/ transportation design news. By following these news, I would gain the most modern information for major brand’s design and reflect upon it to guide my current sketches.

This Car has a simple design that I can change or create more if I wanted to. One major improvement I would like to make in the future is updates on the proportion of the wheels. It is not only lacking in detail, but also out of shape. I would need to do more research on modern car design before updating it. Also, the drawing finished physically is the way I will be doing in the future since I think physical is still the best way to present a drawing/design. I will edit my new work base on this draft/concept and do it digitally.

Dentistry Internship Final Blog – Total of 40 hours

During the past 2 weeks of Internship experience at two different dentist clinics, I’ve now understood more about the industries as well as achieving both ATL goals that I’ve made before the start of the event. The first goal that I’ve achieved is “Understanding my roles”, and I simply achieve it but understanding the customer’s needs. For example, there was one time in both clinics I become the person that measures the body temperature of the incoming patients before their checking at the front desk of both clinics, maybe because I’ve got the experience of getting measured when entering a clinical area so I feel my mood and actions changes depends on the patients. Another ATL Goal that I’ve made was achieving the idea of reflections and improve on it, we were assigned a reflections interview video on the flip grid every 10 hours of shift, however, I also took notes of my actions and reflect them on my own during break/spare time and this I believe improves my recording skills and self-reflecting skills. This improvement particularly would help me achieve in my academic by understanding the importance of taking notes since now I think it is only useful to recall it before the test, but as this method has shown that I do remember more if I recall it every day or even if I have any free time, just look over it. As for the other goal, I think I now understand more about my roles and personal ability in achieving them. So later on in school, when I am assigned to a group, I would try to find my role by my ability because I won’t want to mess up anything as grades get heavier these days. Same with my experience in the clinic that the doctor won’t ask me to cure a patient since I don’t have much ability in the field compared to him/her. Finally, the most unexpected ideas or concepts that I’ve gained from this course is during a lunch with the CEO of the ABC dentist associations who share with me about his life as a Dentist that seeks chances and uncertainties. The main conclusion that I’ve learned is always to try unique cases, even though no one cures them for a reason but if you successfully cure the patient, you will be very successful if You manage it properly. Also, I was afraid I want to learn much from this course since I originally signup for another internship which would learn concepts of company management, but the CEO shares with me loads of stories and experience which gain me the concepts to the outside world and future steps.

Believe it or not, there are times where I want to quit the program because most of the time in the day interns like me would just be standing outside the operating room watching doctors operating surgeries for hours and hours. To me I don’t see any purpose of monitoring professionals on their surgeries as the knowledge required in that field is way out of reach of mine as an 11th grader. After a thorough discussion with my monitor, he decided to communicate with the clinic and shift me the tooth model contracting lab where I see people operating tools to fix the dentures.

Mid-December CAS Engagement

At the begging of the winter vacation, I dig further into the internet and did a few studies about the upcoming trend in 2021. One interesting thing I found was the increase of SUV’s productions compare to the previous years (2018 and 2019). This makes me change my subject of drawing for my project, this time I draw a different car than before with the key characteristics of the sloping roof which gives it a sick look.

Below is my drawing for this Engagement.

My design Theme is still sticking with an SUV (Future Trend), so I continue the trend by sticking with the usual design of the car’s head, with a larger head, the car can not only fit a bigger, stronger engine but also it completes the whole body of the car. But since is getting to the end of 2020, I want to do something different, so I put a sloping roof on the car to make it sportier. This is hoped to gain more young market’s attention (From the design Magazines).

Although this car may seem complete, I hope to add more detail to it in digital form. Which might show up in the later Engagement.

End _ November CAS Engagement.

This week continuing working on my CAS project, but in addition to my car drawing collections, I completed a drawing base off a simple lines. During this CAS activity, I’ve learned to smooth the color for the surface. Even Though I am doing it digitally, but that just give me another chance to practice Drawing on a difference surface. This Art work would be assign in the creativity section.

As we get into winter, I thought about the snows. With the two shapes connected, it reflects my recent connections with my social group (friends) how we help each other finishing the semesters.

Mid-November CAS Engagement

During this period, I’ve finish drawing my 2nd car for my CAS project. (Apart from the Rear tail light all the drawings were from me)

The additional part that I have included from the modern trend is the car’s rear/tail light again. This time we look more deeply at another B.M.W’s design on the new 4 and 8 series. First we know that the even number series are design for sport series compare to the odd number series which is more daily. Unlike the design from the 2 series (the drawing I draw for last engagement). The design of the tail light is not as efficient compare with the 2 series one however it looks better with the body of 4 and 8 series which is what the customers in the market for 4 or 8 series would care. This change my concept of “More Efficiency = More customers”, maybe because the efficiency level on the light source of a car is not the main consideration when people is shopping in car and it is its design that attracts the eye of customers.

End-October CAS Engagement

This week I did not propose any of the CAS Activity instead I work on my 18th month Activity of Drawing Cars.

After proposing the idea for my CAS project activity, I begin to work on my Drawing cars,  this is the first car drawing I’ve done. As I had mention in my proposal about design base on modern trend car, this car uses the tail/rear light design from the famous German brand – B.M.W. Base on my groups research we notice the design not only looks cool, but also have a aerodynamic purpose as well as lighten the cars part by using modern material. Finlay, from this week of car drawing I learn to draw the straight line without rulers support which is demonstrated in the drawing, I hope to. use that technique in my art work.

S&T Object and KQ Blog Post/ Show and Tell Blog Post

What shapes my perspective as a knower?

My object was the Mortal Engines by Philip Reeve, after reading it I came up with 2 concepts that still guild me today. The first one is “Life Aren’t Fair”, the portraits the character’s jobs through the social class. This links to my life and makes me think about my future and understand the student’s job which is to have a good GPA and get into book university. Another concept is the base on the perspectives of others, one (I) shouldn’t change because of what others have told me, sometimes the instructions that were given or expectations that were set from outside might affect one’s decision. But everyone is different, you might be the one that is irregular from the majority. So don’t change because others told you to do so.

Mid – October CAS Evidence

Over the past 2 weeks I have completed my first Proposal with Danny. The proposal was learning basketball and its rules, basically an introduction to basketball since I have no idea the specific rules to it.

Here are some evidence:

Me attempting to shoot the ball at the basket with the correct posture. With the correction and advice form the classmate that know how to shoot a basket properly (correctly). They also told me its the most efficient way to score in basketball, they also told me accuracy and strength aren’t the most important things when mastering basketball, is the concept.
