No Talking

By: Brian Lin

About Andrew Clements: Andrew Clements was born in May 29, 1949, is an American author of children’s books. Clements grew up in Camden, New Jersey and Springfield, Illinois, United States. As a child, he enjoyed summers at a lakeside cabin in Maine where he spent his days swimming and hiking and water skiing, and his evenings reading books. After graduating, he worked as a teacher sharing his love of reading with elementary, middle, and high school students. In 1985, Clements added his own work to the market with a picture book entitled Bird Adalbert. His first novel was the award-winning Frindle, which has won sixteen state book awards, as well as the Christopher Award. Clements works have been translated into several languages including German, Italian, French, Korean, Portuguese, Basque, Hungarian, Japanese, Dutch, and Spanish. Clements lives in Westborough, Massachusetts, with his wife Rebecca and his 4 children. This book is about the fifth-graders war, about boys vs. girls. The fifth-graders are the loudest class in Laketon Elementary school until when Dave Packer challenges Lynsey Burgess to a boys vs. girls “no talking” contest. It is not going to be easy for either sides. No talking for 3-4 days! Not even at home. The teachers and principles of Laketon Elementary very shocked to see this situation. They thought they are being quiet for no reasons, until Ms. Hiatt noticed that when someone said a word, someone will take out a notebook and write something in it. At last, the principle went shouting at Dave for not talking, Dave shouted back. Dave was right but learned his lesson. The score was tie, after Lynsey said a few word to make it tie. It was over… all over.

This book’s main character is Dave and Lynsey, who had been challenging the boys and girls into a “no talking” contest. It all happened in school. Dave had been enemies with Lynsey since the time that Lynsey said that boys are so loud. When Dave accidentally heard it, it caused the whole story to begin. Dave was now arguing with Lynsey. Which caused the contest. A no talking contest with 3-4 days not even talking at home! The contest stopped when Dave yelled at the principal when the principle is yelling at him. eventually, Dave was right. We have the loyalty to not talk, which is not true because they are having a contest. But Dave had learned his lesson and the contest had stopped. The score was tie.

This book’s message is that don’t challenge your friend, when you challenge he/her, the person will think you as an enemy. The story’s theme of this book is friendship. Lynsey had made the score tie, because she still think of Dave as a friend.

I liked the book No Talking because it is interesting because his project is about Gandhi. The person that does not talk to think. Dave had wanted to try that too. I liked this book also because it is about friendship. I think friendship is the most important thing an all of the themes. I recommend to all of the people. This book is very interesting.

This is my Book Review and my Book Trailer AND my book presentation, it is all about the book No Talking.
