BY: Brian Lin

Today an inspirational speaker came to our school, his name was Kevin Laue. He gave a speech to the 4th ~ 7th graders. Kevin was special because he was not like any of us. He only had one hand. He never gives up because he had a dream. Kevin Laue was born on April 13, 1990. He was in the age of 25 now. His dad past away when he was 10 years old. But he still didn’t give up on his own dream. Kevin was 6 feet 11 inches tall and was born missing half of his left hand.

Kevin was first felt depressed from being teased and left out by his classmates when he was in elementary and middle school. But after he starts to move forward towards his dream, which is to become a basketball player, he began to start social with his classmates and teammates on his basketball team. He starts to like himself. Kevin’s parents starts by encourage Kevin to play soccer. But Kevin did NOT like soccer, he thinks that basketball was his future. So that it became his dream. Kevin told us that everyone of us matters, and everyone of us have our own dream. And once you have a dream, you should never give up on it.

Kevin inspired every single person in his speech today. Kevin inspired me to keep playing tennis and never give up. Kevin’s speech inspired all of us to move towards the up, which is towards your own dream. Kevin’s words can help me get confidence by thinking of what he did. -Never give up, never give up, never give up… try your best on what you can do… Kevin said that he was CERTAIN to be a basketball player because that was his dream and he loved it. Kevin’s speech made me also felt CERTAIN that I would become a tennis player when I grow up.Kevin’s words made me have a plan on knowing what to do this summer… working and practicing on my dream.: soccer and tennis.

This is a movie trailer about Kevin Laue.

We went to the Kenting Aquarium at May to sleepover and learn more things about the ocean and the aquarium.

This is a presentation that our group created by answering questions that Miss Chagaris made us do when we explore the aquarium.

This is a photo of our class playing in the splash pool.

Island of the Blue Dolphins by Scott O’Dell was based on a true story about a girl named Karana who survives on an island for 18 years. Karana from Island of the Blue Dolphins knows how to be resourceful.

My definition of resourceful is to know what to do or where to get help in any situations. By knowing this, we can see that Karana shows resourcefulness by hiding from the Aleuts when they came, climbing the cliff when the tsunami came, even knowing her choice about killing Rontu or not when he was hurt by Karana herself. Another definition for resourceful of mine is brave. Karana needs to show bravery about hiding from the Aleuts, climbing the cliff, and making the weapons when it was a law the no woman can make weapons in her village.

I think Karana grows up a lot by knowing what her choice is. Before, Karana has to decide with her father, her sister Ulape, or maybe Ramo. But now Karana can choose wisely, knowing how to decide by estimating the time. For example, when the Tsunami came and if Karana went back to pack her things, Karana might be washed away by the tsunami! Karana is also knowing what is her choice of about trusting Tutok or not. Anyways, Kanana shows confidence by doing these things.

However, Karana had faced many problems in many situations in the island. But Karana solved them all by showing resourcefulness, confidence, and bravery. For example, when the tsunami came, Karana shows resourcefulness by knowing what to do like climbing the cliff. By climbing the cliff, Karana needs confidence to climb it. Another example is when Karana saves Rontu, who was hurted by Karana herself. Karana saves Rontu by showing confidence and bravery to carry him home instead for killing him. Then, Karana shows resourcefulness by knowing what to do to heal Rontu.

Island of the Blue Dolphins by Scott O’Dell is a survival, story; I like survival stories because it makes the story move and more interesting. I wish I would read more stories by Scott O’ Dell.

In class, we read an AWESOME book called, “Island of the Blue Dolphins.” it was a great book. Especially, it is a survival story. This is the book cover. (Below) Enjoy reading!

A Pirate’s Message
By: Brian Lin

My name is Flamengo Jake Ravenclaw. And if you are reading this message, it means I am already dead. I’m writing this because I have hidden my treasure on Diamond Island and if you are lucky, you can follow my map and instructions and maybe good fortune will befall on you, but be careful this journey won’t be an easy one. First let me tell you about myself so that my legacy lives on.
Now I am going to tell about myself. My name is Flamengo Jake Ravenclaw. I am mean and scary. Nobody can fight me because I’m too strong. My father, Rake de Santos Ravenclaw, is the captain of the pirate crew called Flamengo. I think this is how I got my name.
Diamond Island is located on the north side of Germany. Now I’ll tell you the latitude and longitude location. 54.5167° N, 8.6369° E. The island is rare, but if you are reading this, it means the island is waiting for you to go there and dig out the treasure. However, this search for the treasure is not only easy, it is difficult and hard. It lies between your life… Dead or Alive.
There are many legends about Diamond Island and let me tell you, they are true. First of all in the forest, there is a old woman. She is nice and kind. She asked me to help her get a cup of water, well, that time I was a kind young kid. I did everything she said. After a day, she gave me a basket of eggs. The old woman told me to throw them behind my shoulders on my way home. I did what she told me. And I realized that the talking eggs were diamonds inside. I got more eggs with diamond inside because the woman said so.
If you are brave enough to try and find my buried treasure you will not be disappointed. My treasure is funny, but be sure not to laugh at anything you see. If you disobeyed my conditions, you will regret what you find after all. My treasure is from the famous science lab of Germany. It was invented by Karl Benz. The German inventor. After I become older, I became more and more evil. I tried to steal the eggs, and of course, they chased me. On my ship, I putted the eggs in a golden treasure box. And I arrived at a island that did not exists on the map. I buried the treasure. No one knows about it. This message is left for you… the trail is is followed by my treasure instructions. The soldiers who were chasing me was furious. They killed me… good luck…

You can follow my map trail and read my map instructions, but be careful about the measurements. 1 centimeter wrong, it would not leads to the treasure. Also, a reminder, to find my treasure, you must have patience.
Good luck and watch out for the river that is rushing water out when you stop by the east bay of Diamond Island.

Sincerely,
Flamengo Jake Ravenclaw

This is my Pirate’s Message 🙂 thanks!
