Bias In Media

0

In this summative assessment, we learned how bias and stereotypes of human perspectives can harm individuals and society. I’ve gained experienced how to detect them in different types of media including news articles, advertisements, TV shows, songs, and a product I’ve made that demonstrates my viewpoints and how it harms the society. In the same point, I learned to be aware of keeping bias away from my own text.

The G.R.A.S.P. was a science group project to introduce to our classmates the aspect of a simple machine through a lesson and also demonstration of a simple machine through an experiment.

1. What were your contributions to the success of your group’s lesson presentation? Be specific. What parts did you research, what parts of the experiment did you have responsibility for, what were your responsibilities for the lesson preparation and presentation?

I contributed in the whole lab report, which made them in some parts of our scripts, responsible for researching background information, collecting data into graphs, then drawing how we conducted our experiment.

2. Describe one part of this project that was a challenge? How did you respond to this challenge?

One challenge was communicating with group members, we all have our own available times and unavailable times, but some did less which means others have to do more. I respond by spending more times than other to finish this assignment

3. Describe what you most enjoyed about the project? What part are you most proud of–that you say “WE DID GREAT”?

What I enjoyed in our project is conducting the experiment and writing the lab report. I liked how we measured and collected data from each and every stairs in the campus. Lab report being able to explain our thoughts to the experiment by mainly hypothesis and conclusion. Hypothesis is a scientific guess while conclusion is explaining is your hypothesis correct or not.

4. Long after this project has ended, what parts of the experience will you remember? (…“the nightmare is over, I have blocked it completely from my mind!”…hopefully not!)

I remembered different group members participate and contributed different amount of work, the project is finally over!

Equity and Equality Summative

0

Read my sketchnote on Occupational Therapy (OT) created by drawing.

This is my TIEA  paragraph for Equity in Rules by Cynthia Lord:

In the story Rules, Cynthia Lord demonstrates caring through dialogue between characters to help support David in being treated fairly. Catherine has to take care of his brother David in Summer, because he has autism. Ryan teases and make fun of David while Catherine tries to let David understand what kind of person Ryan is and doesn’t want David to think of Ryan as a friend which embarrasses Catherine. “ ‘And the worst part,’ I whisper so Mom can’t overhear, ‘David thinks Ryan’s his friend. He doesn’t understand Ryan’s only making fun of him.’ I added words fast. Hate. Unfair.” (117) Lord presents David when Catherine wants a normal life, it challenges Catherine into a serious discussion with herself. Knowing that David his her brother, with autism, Catherine sets up list of rules for David so she wouldn’t embarrass herself in her brother’s actions in public. However, Catherine stands up for David when Ryan, a mean boy teases him and embarrass Catherine in front of her neighbor she is looking forward to make friends with, Kristi. Catherine first wants David to understand that Ryan is not his friend, then tells Ryan seriously to stop making fun of David. Lord implies that caring can be communicated through actions and take responsibility as a role.

Rules: Sketchnote

0

In this sketchnote, we were instructed to create a sketch note that sketches out the conflict, story arc, themes, character traits, or the plot of the book. In this assignment, I tried to sketch out the tone of the author, characters, how they relate to each other, themes, plot, and the conflict. I tried to explain every part of the story so readers can clearly understand what I know too.

Rules: Booksnaps

0

Booksnaps are simple pictures of book pages and write simple descriptions and bitmojis, and write what we think about the part of the book.

Journalism Reflection
October 15th, 2017
Brian Lin

Key Concept: Communication
Related Concept: Style
Global Context: Personal and Cultural Expression
Unit question: How can I take something that happens everyday and create a news story?
Final Project: Write a news article and create a newspaper
Start Date: 8/22
End Date: 10/11

In this unit, we learned to develop skill and technique by first watching CNN 10 videos and took notes about content and style and learn how reporters turn stories into news article that hooks readers in. Online videos, we used turbo notes to take notes by the we 5W’s and H, this is a great skill to use because we cover up the content in the article. It might be hard to find the 5W’s and H sometimes when the article or reporter doesn’t talk about it much, or because it is hard to categorize them. Then we learned to take visual notes, visual notes help us know and understand information with simple pictures, not jotting down all the words or text you hear or see from the reporter or article. We did news articles annotation after that, we learned to annotate technique and style, 5Ws and H, content, relation among text, and pictures. After we did a few practice of annotating news articles, we had a formative assessment that we had to annotate 1 news article the teacher chose for us, in the formative, we can see where we are in the MYP rubric and know what we should improve for the summative coming up after that. Annotating is a really good technique to understand the article better, you cover up the main points you should know, and organize them so when other people read the annotation, they will understand the article faster, we can develop the skill of annotating, finding the main points faster and know why the author used this skill and how it changes viewpoints of readers.

First News Article

We started to write our own news article, we started by writing what came through our brain in the notebook, this is quite challenging because we didn’t do any research yet at this point. After we know the main layout and topic, we know where we should add research to give evidence and make statements to support our judgements. After we know where and what kind of research we need to support our news article, we made survey for students at school and interviews so we can put quotes in our news article to support more. We also did additional research from online resources and put research in our own words into different part of our news article that fits. Another skill we used when writing our drafts is peer editing, with classmates, this skill can help you really much because they can see problems in your news article while you can’t see when you write, they give out feedbacks and opinions to you, and you can decide whether you want to change it or not, after a few peer edits, now we can put all the feedbacks and sort them out and finally create a final draft. After that, we worked in groups to build up a newspaper with several different news article topics, by using google presentations, I learned how to format the correct way and make it look like a professional newspaper.

In our summative, we had 2 parts, one which I already talked about, creating our own news article. The other part of the summative is to annotate 2 more news article, using the skills we’ve practiced and learned before to match the MYP rubric to the highest level, organizing our annotations, and make sure we covered the style and content for the whole article. After we read through both articles and annotated them so we really understand both articles, we were asked to compare and contrast the 2 articles about the similarities and differences, focusing on content, language, patterns, mood, tone, theme, style and techniques.

Compare and Contrast Paragraphs

This activity helped me develop my learner profile of communicator as it involved me doing peer edits and compare and contrast different styles of news articles. I learned to communicate with other people when doing peer edits when we discussed problems in different perspectives. I also learned to communicate better with myself when doing filters with the feedbacks I get from peer edits, weather to accept or decline different feedbacks so it really helps my news article to improve and perform in the way I want.

Trashing Our World

0

In this summative, I wrote an article about people trashing the world we share, the with Antony, Jacqueline, and Paula, we put our articles into a newspaper. I have given some solutions about the problem from my research. Then I annotated news articles and compared and contrasted them.

Compare and Contrast Paragraphs
September 28, 2017

Similarities:
The 2 news article are similar by the content, tone, style, and theme. First, the two articles are both talking about Hurricane Harvey that struck Texas, causing flooding and massive destruction to the city. The writer of both article sounded serious when they explained the Hurricane and the situation at that time. Both writers gave numbers, for example, both article pointed out the category of Hurricane Harvey, its wind power, the inches of rain, and how many people are forced to leave their shelters. Lastly, the style and theme, both writers like to use pictures and description to give the readers a clear mind and not be confused or get bored. They also like to give quotes from main politics people to make sure nobody gets crazy, this is a good technique because it calm people down and also tell others that the government is caring about this disaster, the main style of two articles are mostly same because they are news articles and they have the same amount of research, one doesn’t gets more accurate information and so does the other, it is how they use the information and put them together.

Differences:
They are somehow different by the language and mood. The news article Texas Faces Massive Flooding seems to write about the research of Hurricanes, and give facts of the situation, but the article Catastrophe in the Golf did research about the Hurricane, people, and the rescue process as a result of Hurricane Harvey. The article has a certain amount of picture differences, one gave more pictures that explains the article they are talking about, the other gave small pictures of other situations, at this point, the pictures might get off topic when you have a picture that doesn’t relate to the paragraph. In the article Texas Faces Massive Flooding, the topics are separated by words, like titles, but in the other article, Catastrophe in the Golf, a new idea is separated by pictures, pictures starts their main ideas, and then paragraphs that support them.
