Hello,

Only three weeks left. I will be sad to see the year end. It has been an amazing first year for me here at KAS. I truly appreciate all your support to ensure the success of every students.

*Students will continue to read for a minimum of 30 minutes every day for the remainder of the school year.

It would be helpful if students find ways to utilize their English as much as possible over the summer. One of my favorite sayings, as with anything, students will not improve unless they practice. It may a difficult transition if students do not speak English all summer and are expected to function primarily in English during the school year.

7th Grade

Students just finished reading The Giver and created their own version of the perfect society. You can find their work completed on their blogs. It was really interesting to see their societies as well as what they consider a “perfect” world.  I was really impressed with their projects. Students then presented their communities to their classmates and attempted to persuade them to live in their community. Students assessed each other by rating their presentations for each of the sections they had to describe. The students did OK on their presentations, but I definitely think this is an area for growth for the majority of students.

* Scholastic Summer Challenge

Students will be competing in a reading challenge as part of their English homework over the summer. Students have already logged into their account. For those of you, who will be traveling, but will still have access to your phones, there is a great free app! that can be downloaded to help students monitor the minutes that they are reading. It works for iPhone and Android. Students can only log their minutes once per day. Happy Reading!

*This applies to Ms. Gilbert’s 7th grade class as well.

8th Grade

Students have been busy working on a book trailer as well as reading a novel. Students were given a choice for their novel. They just finished those today and will be working on their projects for them this week. I was extremely impressed with their book trailers. They did an amazing job that exceded my expectations. They have flourished in creating amazing short movies. I am hoping to have them create and analyze one final project after their book projects.

Life is a natural school, and I want to be as knowledgeable as possible. Therefore, I want to live my life to the fullest and view everyday as an adventure. It doesn't get any better than reading, viewing, or listening to a great story. "I must say that I find television very educational. The minute somebody turns it on, I go to the library and read a book." ~Groucho Marx "There is more treasure in books than in all the pirate's loot on Treasure Island." ~Walt Disney "We read to know we are not alone." ~C.S. Lewis "Any book that helps a child to form a habit of reading, to make reading one of his deep and continuing needs, is good for him." ~ Maya Angelou "It is not true we have only one life to live, if we can read, we can live as many lives and as many kinds of lives as we wish." ~S.I. Hayakawa
