Students need to read every day for a minimum of 30 minutes including the weekends. They should be logging their minutes at Reading Rewards. In order to become better readers, they need to read often. Students have a novel to read over break, projects to complete on the novel, writing assignment for it as well, and a blog post. These are due January 12th and students need to bring everything not able to be turned in online on Monday January 13, 2014.

7TH GRADE

The students received their book and projects today. They will be reading Stargirl over the break. They had their project directions emailed to them and posted on Edmodo. Stargirl Projects will count as 50 points each and students must choose 3. Then they will write 3 TIEA paragraphs.

Students will continue our work with our short stories unit after the holidays. We just read our first short story “Rikki Tikki Tavi”. Students completed 3 journal entries from the main character’s perspective, wrote a TIEA paragaph, and completed a picture plot diagram.

8TH GRADE

The students received their book and projects today. They will be reading The Westing Game over the break. They had their project directions emailed to them and posted on Edmodo. The Westing Game Projects will count as 50 points each and students must choose 3. Then they will write 3 TIEA paragraphs.

Students have been studying how to find bias in news. We will continue the non-fiction unit after the holidays. They have been reading several articles on how to detect bias. They found two news articles on the same topic, analyzed it for bias, and compared discrepancy between them. Next, they will write a TIEA paragraph on their articles. While this topic is really difficult, students are approaching it with great questions.

Have a restful and wonderful holiday! Enjoy this time together and stay safe!
