Equity Unit Reflection — Including a new style: Mind Map!

I loved this unit! We used a brand new way for finishing this unit, a PSA, and I learned so many things while completing this unit! Here’s something that I learned in this unit…

    • 1. Prove whatever people said about you.
      2. Nachos is not a healthy food choice.
      3. Don’t judge people from the outside. We don’t know what he/she’s thinking when he/she did a inferior event.
      4. Healthy eating = being balanced, Being balanced = following the IB Learner Profile.
      5. Eat a healthy lifestyle can let you have a longer live expectancy.

Here’s a brief summary of what I’ve done in this unit.

For the final PSA summative, I did pretty well, and I chose a new tool, called Adobe Spark, to create my PSA after seeing many classmates using Powtoon to create their PSA. I wanted to make my PSA to become more exceptional than other PSAs using Powtoon. In spite of this, I soon regret choosing Adobe Spark, since they don’t give you any customize choices unless upgrading to a Pro account, while Powtoon can let you customize your video to include fancy fonts, themes, and even animated character. Despite having no customize choices, Adobe Spark and let you insert videos inside your video, while Powtoons can’t. While researching about healthy eating in order to do my PSA, I learned that eat a healthy lifestlye = being balanced, and balanced is a profile in the IB Learner Profiles, which our school encourages all students to follow them. I also learned that if you eat a healthy lifestyle, you will have a longer life expectancy.

For this whole unit, me and 4 other classmates in my group read a book called “The Defense of Thaddeus A. Ledbetter” by John Gosselink, and we eventually discussed this book twice, once for the summative. I think that we did well in the summative discussion, better than the last one, since Anthony and Brian finally gave some chance for other people to speak out during the discussion! Anthony also shared his timeline of this book to us throughout this discussion, and that was nice! You can see the discussion video on Youtube at https://youtu.be/T6l2BqFthug

We all took book snaps when reading this book, and you know what? I love taking book snaps! I used Snapchat to annotate my book snap pictures, and it looked pretty nice. After doing all of the book snaps, I learned 3 key points. One, don’t judge people from the outside. Thaddeus, the main character, always did inferior actions throughout this book, although he thinks that his actions are trying to help people to achieve a higher quality life! He’s been mistreated so much in this book, since every people just judged his actions from the outside, not from the inside. Second, we have to eat a healthy lifestyle. Thaddeus loves to eat nachos, but this isn’t very good. Even Ms. Wilkes, the lunch lady, thinks that nachos for everyday lunch isn’t very good. Third, we have to prove things before making a decision about it. Thaddeus always wanted to prove that he did the right thing, and with his uncle’s help, the principal decided to remove him from ISS after he realized that he’s been mistreated with all of his actions.

Finally, I think that I did poorly in my TIEA summative. I even forgot to italicize or underline the book title (Ughhh)! I also introduced new evidence in the analysis part, which we shouldn’t do that in TIEAs. Despite of this, I improved a lot in my MLA citation part, which we can’t use footnotes in this. You can see my final TIEA in https://share.kas.tw/hunche22/2017/11/28/equity-summative-healthy-eating/ (You can also see my PSA and the discussion video in this post also)

Overall, I did exceptionally well in this unit, except for the TIEA summative. I also loved finishing this unit, and I hope future L&L classes will have this lesson also. I loved the process of doing book snaps and creating a PSA with Spark. I loved it!
