A Doll’s House Learner Portfolio

In the first unit for Language & Literature this year, we had studied and learned about feminism, patriarchy, and gender roles through the play, A Doll’s House. Throughout this unit, we had done a few assignments in order to broaden our knowledge about the issues, and relating it back into A Doll’s House, understanding why and how each character behaves in the way they behave.

One assignment that we did was presentations relating to different themes in A Doll’s House. Each groups had different topics to present about, such as Henrik Ibsen, Norway, A Doll’s House, Realism and Naturalism, Ibsen’s Other Plays, Women in the Victorian Period, Class in Victorian Society. In my group, we presented about Class in the Victorian Society, explaining how people from different classes had different treatments, and how it greatly affected many people.

Another assignment that we had worked on is a reading journal for A Doll’s House. Although we could just watch the play to understand the concept of A Doll’s House, reading the play would also help us understand and analyze the actions and personalities of each character even further. Reading the play would also help us understand different themes shown in the play, by the characters’ actions and dialogue being depicted through text. While reading through the play, we had to analyze different themes shown, such as the relationships between men and women, masculinity and femininity, patriarchy and feminism, class and money, and other events shown in the play that we found interesting. Our analysis of each play would then be written in the reading journal.

Other than analyzing A Doll’s House, we had also taken notes on The Feminist Lens. In this assignment, we learned about definitions relating to feminism, what feminists believe, and our own reflections and opinions. This helped us understand how women who grew up differently, or women with different perspectives, can also have similar ideas and how we can see that they are all treated similarly in a way, just because of their gender.

Knowledge and Maps

It is important for us humans to gain knowledge and to care about learning more. Being curious is human nature, and it has brought us to many discoveries, new ideas, and innovations that we have now. Being curious can be as small as just reading the news, learning more about events that are happening worldwide, or just asking a simple question. All of this helps us learn more and gain more knowledge and perspective to the world we are in now. This would even help us lead to being more advanced, as we acquire more knowledge.

Before learning about a certain topic, or before knowing an answer to a question, it is common for people to assume the answer, or to expect a certain answer. Making guesses is also important to humans, no matter whether or not the answer would be correct or incorrect, there would always be a logical answer behind making the guess. We would always assume an answer to a question based on logic and the knowledge that we already understand. This would impact how we perceive things as sometimes we might start assuming things more often than finding an actual answer, and not all assumptions might be correct; however, finding out the answer and gaining knowledge would be beneficial.

Our interactions with the material world is able to shape our knowledge as when we learn and discover new objects and materials by the senses we have. This would help us gain our knowledge as we would discover new physical materials, letting us gain an understanding on textures, colors, smells, etc. For example, this lets us understand what an object feels like, without touching it, or that we can assume what it feels like. There are many situations where it is more important to know how to do something than knowing that something. Basic skills in life requires an individual to know how to do them, such as walking, writing, and reading. “Knowing that” is only important when knowing an answer to something. Empathy and imagination is able to help us understand other perspectives by seeing how other people could be suffering, and putting ourselves into their shoes. This would make us also sympathize for them as we would look at different perspectives to gain knowledge.

My CAS Profile

Hi! My name is Alicia, and I am 16 years old. I was born in Jakarta, Indonesia, lived in Singapore until I was 12 years old, and now I live in Kaohsiung, Taiwan.

Growing up, I have always felt that I am quite a creative and curious person. I really enjoyed expressing my creativity through artworks, creating drawings, paintings, and sculptures. I also really enjoyed exploring the world around me, finding out more about different cultures, and traditions. Although I have many interests and hobbies, I felt that as I grew older, I start to lose motivation and interest to do certain activities that I used to enjoy doing, and mainly focused on studying and doing well in my academics. As CAS was introduced to me, I had realized that this would be a great opportunity for me to start doing the activities that I had enjoyed doing again, as well as discovering and expanding more of my interests. I would be able to work on developing my hobbies, finding out what I enjoy doing the most, and also being able to balance my academics and my hobbies.

The IB Learner profile traits that I strongly identify with currently is being open-minded and being an inquirer. When being open-minded, I often view different ideas in several different perspectives, opening up to new ideas, letting myself be more aware of my surroundings, and understanding other individuals more. While exposing myself to new ideas, different cultures, values, and perspectives, it allows me to gain knowledge, and grow from experience. As an inquirer, I often gain knowledge by being curious and interested in the subject area. While having curiosity, it allows me to want to learn more about the subject as I would enjoy learning about it.

The IB Learner profile trait that I currently do not identify with is being balanced. Although sometimes I am able to be balanced, by managing my time well for school work and having free time for myself, it is still a trait that I feel that could be improved if I work a little harder, and procrastinate less. Procrastinating works for me, as I would still be able to complete my work on time; however, it creates more stress for me, and it makes me more worried about whether or not I have completed all my work.

From the CAS program, I hope to be able to destress from the workload given to me throughout the school year, by doing activities that I enjoy, participating in service programs to feel rewarded, and to gain more interests and hobbies. This would help me enjoy my diploma program more, as I would be able to bring myself to try new activities, and to continue doing activities that I am interested in. A personal challenge that I would like to set for myself is to not be afraid to try new things, no matter how difficult it is. If I ever have the chance to participate in an activity that I have never tried before, I should go ahead and do it, instead of thinking about it and regretting about not doing it.
