I am always excited to begin a new school year with returning students as well as all the new students! I am looking forward to working with you and your child(ren).  In order to help the school year progress nicely, I do have a few expectations. They can be found on the classroom expectations page. One of the major skills that middle school students need to cultivate is time management. Assignments are not always due the next day. Therefore students need to prioritize their time to ensure that work is turned in on time. If you are curious to know more about me,  it can be found on Ms. Marum’s Mind page on my blog.

Last week we worked on building a class community as well as ensuring the school year will go smoothly. We are continuing that this week while also gearing up to be active learners who are also self reflective. We will continually refer to digital citizenship, academic honesty (citing sources), as well focusing on Reading, Writing, Speaking, Listening, and Presenting.

In order for students to be successful in my class, they need to read a minimum of 20 minutes (in English) everyday including the weekend. I do not dictate what they read, unless it is a class novel, except that it has to be in English. Please encourage your child(ren) to choose something that they enjoy to read.

Thank you in advance for all that you to help your child(ren) be successful. This year will be wonderful as you, myself, and the student work together.

8-12-13

Parents,

Welcome back! I trust that everyone experienced a restful, relaxing summer spent with loved ones. I am looking forward to another amazing year with the students. I know that all involved work tirelessly to ensure the succes of the students. I welcome communication and an open dialogue with you. Any time you have any questions, comments, concerns, or praises, please email me. I know that this year can be amazing. Let’s keep the lines of communication open and work together for betterment of the students.

Expectations

I only have two expectations in my classroom. All positive aspects of life fall into these two categories.

  1. Be Respectful
  2. Be Responsible

Every decision and situation always give the choice of being respectful and responsible. I want students to become people who can make responsible and respectful decisions in their life. As well as being respectful and responsible, I want students to be confident in English. In order to that, they need to understand two more principles.

Best: Always do your best on EVERYTHING!

“We have to do the best we can. This is our sacred human responsibility.”~ Albert Einstein

Mistakes:  It is OK to make mistakes as long as you are doing your best.

“While one person hesitates because he feels inferior, the other is busy making mistakes and becoming superior.”~ Henry C. Link

Public speaking and participation are a big component of the class. It is important that students participate in discussions and are well prepared for any public speaking opportunities.

I will be using Edmodo again this year for class assignments. Students will be expected to check this daily and often. It will be the most efficient way to access their assignments in English, but also in other classes that are using Edmodo. It can be a great tool for them to use to be organized as well. Parents can also link to their child’s Edmodo account and see the activity and assignments.

It will be vital that students come to class with their MacBooks fully charged every day. We will use them almost daily in English class.

I cannot emphasize enough how much I appreciate your communication. Again, please email with any questions, concerns, or comments! I know this year will be exceptional!

Respectfully,

Terea Marcum
