Marshmallow Tower Challenge Reflection

Today, we did a cool, fun, and interesting activity during science class. That is…

THE MARSHMALLOW TOWER CHALLENGE! You can learn more about it here

So basically we used 20 sticks of raw spaghetti, 1yd (91.44 cm) of tape & string, and a marshmallow within 20min.

Here’s some picture of it…

We tried to make our structure stronger by using much tape as possible to stabilize the entire tower, however the base isn’t supported through a strong base, so it collapsed when the time ran out. During the building process, we planned to make the base stronger by breaking several spaghetti sticks and combine them together. This wasn’t done, so that the tower wasn’t stabilized enough to keep it from standing after time has ended. We don’t know if the placing of marshmallow will affect the strength of the tower because we didn’t test it. We could build a stronger tower using the same materials as long as the base can support the entire tower well, but alternatives can be used, for example, wooden sticks can be better since it’s hard to break and are less fragile. Of course, the size of the base may affect the strength of the tower! Our tower didn’t have a base, just 3 sticks of spaghetti touching the table, supporting the entire tower. (Like a tripod) Since spaghetti sticks are fragile, this didn’t work. Overall, we communicated and collaborated well during this 20-minute period, and we discussed a lot on how to make our tower stabilized. Even though we failed, we are grateful of our great collaboration together to complete this task.
