Eric Chen’s CAS Journey – 2020-21 Winter Break Edition Part 2

Here comes the second part of my CAS Journey Winter Break Edition, where I reflect back to my CAS experiences that I have completed during the winter break…

First of all, as one of my first planned CAS experiences, I have completed a timeline of the Republican Party based on Heather Cox Richardson’s To Make Men Free. This was my second take on history timelines as I have already completed one on banknotes as my MYP Personal Project. This also ties into my interest in politics, especially the US Presidential Election this past November. Honestly, I feel like the completed timeline looks nearly the same as my banknotes timeline, but with ample superficial differences. Check it out…

How do you feel about this timeline? Please leave your comments below! I would love to receive some feedback for me to consider in future timelines.

Next, I went to a beach clean-up event with my fellow GIN club members. This was my first time attending a beach clean-up and honestly I was shocked finding so much trash (a lot of them are plastic, which makes the beach’s condition more troubling.) on a relatively unknown beach here in Kaohsiung. This experience connects to ethics because our decisions can shape how our world looks. For instance, a lot of Taiwanese people made poor decisions when they enjoyed walking by the beach, throwing trash on the beach instead of taking them away as they left, destroying the scenery and also the ecosystem of the beach as a result. It is very troublesome and arduous to pick up that vast amount of trash from the beach, and that allowed me to put myself in the shoes of custodians who do this type of stuff every day. I have become more vigilant when it comes to throwing trash away as a result, facilitating my growth as an environmentally-concerned person living on this planet where environmental destruction is still happening every day due to unethical decisions. With tons of trash collected as part of this process, this is definitely a great way to start a new year strong! A major accomplishment throughout my KAS career, indeed!

Due to the COVID-19 Pandemic, I was forced to stay at home most of the time during the break out of fear of a potential outbreak here in Taiwan as winter came. However, this gave me a huge opportunity to become productive in my CAS experiences throughout this 3-week period, and I have indeed learned a lot by way of these 3 major CAS experiences!
