The Marcum Paper + Eric Chen

As I’m wrapping up the newspaper unit on L&L, here’s what I did in the summatives of this unit, including a real “Marcum Newspaper” and many annotations! The Marcum Newspaper includes real-time events that is happening in KAS and Taiwan and around the world, and it’s beautifully formatted to catch the reader’s’ eyes. So what are you waiting for?

Here’s the “Marcum Newspaper!”

For the annotations summative, I’ve also wrote a compare and contrast paragraph. Here it is:

COMPARE
In the 2 stories, they all talk about the damages caused by the great Hurricane Harvey, which struck the shores of Texas as a category 4 typhoon. They all include detailed pictures about what citizens had done to save lives during the powerful storm. Electricities are lost, and hundreds of houses are damaged due to heavy winds and rain. For example, in the news story “Catastrophe in the Gulf,” it had an image on the first page about a two-story building destroyed after Harvey hit Rockport, TX. For the news story “Texas Faces Massive Flooding,” there’s an image on pg. 3 about a man stepping atop of the remains of buildings destroyed during the storm. These images help readers to know how strong Hurricane Harvey was when it struck Texas. Both stories are formatted in the same format, and included the same elements in the headline and the byline. So probably these two stories are almost the same, with some differences between the elements in the story.

CONTRAST
Although there are many similarities between the two stories, there are some slight differences between them. That is, the elements that are covered in the stories are different. For the news story “Catastrophe in the Gulf,” it had covered more elements then the news story “Texas Faces Massive Flooding.” For the “Catastrophe in the Gulf” news story, it included predicts of the path which Harvey is going, a real-time image of Harvey striking the shores of Texas, and more quotes from Texas citizens. In the “Texas Faces Massive Flooding,” it just covered the topic of rescuing citizens who are affected with the flooding. It covered ways of rescuing citizens in this strong storm, but it need to include more informations to make it an interesting short news story. The elements of the news story can affect what people think about the news story that a reporter reports, so it’s very important to include many elements in the story to make it an interesting story. (In my opinion, the “Texas Faces Massive Flooding” story isn’t catching my eyes, but the “Catastrophe in the Gulf” does. Also, “Texas Faces Massive Flooding” isn’t a good title to catch the reader’s eyes.)

At last, here comes the two Hurricane Harvey news article that I annotated recently… I’m deeply saddened of so many people being evacuated or have died during the event. God bless them!
