IDU Reflection

Jasper Li

  • Discuss how knowledge from I&S and chemistry helps better understand complex issues and  enables action

I&S studies individuals and societies and it encompasses a wide range of topics such as history, geography, and economics, that provide valuable insight for our topic. This gives us economic and political context surrounding an issue. Since I&S is a branch of social sciences, the most valuable insight given are the social dynamics surrounding these issues. In our case, which is the Bhopal Gas Tragedy, it revealed the rapid attempt of industrialization in Bhopal, motivated by economic purpose that prioritized industrial growth over safety. And this negligence from corporate companies led to the death of tens of thousands over one small accident. I&S gave us a perspective that allows us to better understand the interconnectedness between economic incentives and social dynamics. Chemistry brings up a different but equally important perspective to our issue. Rather than the event, chemistry focuses more on the chemical itself used in the Bhopal Gas Tragedy. Methyl Isocyanate, or MIC for short, has severe consequences on human health if exposed to. Understanding this chemical helps us to be more aware and prepare preventive measures and how to mitigate effects of the gas. This study of the gas also showed us the short and long term effects on human health and environment, which connects us to I&S, as seen with how humans handle the situation afterwards. Chemistry, in this study, allowed us to understand the intricate details behind this destructive disaster.

  • Did this change your perspective on chemical or technological developments?

I don’t think this really changed my perspective on chemical and technological development and I will always advocate for the further progression of mankind. However, my main takeaway from this interdisciplinary unit is the importance of safety in industrial practices. While I like new advancements in technology, I believe that it is important to maintain ethical integrity while doing so, especially in the safety of workers and people around the area. The Bhopal Gas Tragedy serves as a warning on the devastating impact something can have if economic motivations lead to negligence.

  • How do science and I&S overlap in a real world context?

There are many examples where science and I&S overlap, the main example I think of when it comes to this question is healthcare. Science focuses on the actual medical and health sciences, such as research to combat diseases and developing treatment and the other biological aspects of the human body. I&S focuses more on the societal impact of healthcare, how effective and needed it is, then using the information to make policies relating to it and continue adjusting these policies as new information comes in. Another example where science and I&S overlap is in the development of new technologies and innovations. Science advances technology and finds solutions to problems. I&S once again learn about the social implications of said technologies and addressing issues such as ethical concerns and impact of technology on communities.

  • Did this help you address real-world issues?

Somewhat. The main focus of our topic was pretty niche since methyl isocyanate is not a very talked about chemical. The Bhopal Gas Tragedy is also a few decades old so I can’t say our topic really talks about real world mainstream issues today. However, despite not being the focus of our research, I did learn about the ethics in working in places like these, with dangerous jobs and low pay. While not all of this information is written on the pamphlet, I believe this is still a very relevant topic today, albeit not as serious as it was before.

  • Are science and technological developments always worth the potential harms?

I believe yes. As said above, I am an advocate for further technological progression. My main motive behind this is just to make life easier and keep things interesting. This isn’t a very enticing motivation but I don’t see how it is possible for us to stay the same while everything around us changes. I did say that I believe that we should maintain ethical integrity, and I still do, at least when it comes to humans. I just think that there are so many possibilities out there that haven’t been explored and letting things stay the same would be such a waste. So even if it is only one step, we should all strive to move forward. After all, every journey starts with one step.

Tessellations

Tessellation: shape that is repeated across a plane without any gaps in between or overlaps over each other

Examples: tessellations are used very often in life. Examples are brick walls, flooring and ceiling tiles, or chess boards. Art with tessellations are made throughout various cultures such as islamic architecture. However, tessellations are not just limited to man made items, there are natural tessellations as well. Most common example is the hexagon cells in a honeycomb.

Honeycomb
Islamic art

My tessellations:

The first tessellation is a translation tessellation. I cut out shapes randomly from the bottom and the right and stick it to the top and the left. After I traced my tessellation, I noticed the top of the shape has a semi resemblance to a mountain so I split the shape into 3 sections and colored each section green. The green gets lighter as you move up the layers.
The second tessellation is a reflection tessellation. Again, I cut out random shapes. However, this time I cut out shapes from the bottom and the right and tape them to the top and the left and flipping them. With the colors, I tried making a checkered pattern out of black and white. Then I realized it would look stupid so I replaced the black with some random colors. And now it looks even more stupid.
The final tessellation is a rotation tessellation. I cut out random shapes from the bottom and the left and tape the shape I cut out from the bottom to the right and the left to the top. I chose some lighter colors that would compliment each other and made sure the tessellation wasn’t too bright for the watcher’s eye’s to bear.

Reflection: This was certainly an interesting experience and I have never done anything like this. I’ve never learned about the process of making tessellations. I didn’t face too much problems around the technical aspect. The problems I faced were time and my limitations. This entire project was very time consuming. You also need to color the tessellations however, I do not have any color pencils. And just before the project was due, I conveniently got Covid so I needed someone to get it for me. This part was a huge pain but it was cool seeing the tessellations being brought to life with colors. Overall, this project has taught me a lot about tessellations. Tessellations follows the concept of symmetry and applies this concept to art, architecture, and many other areas in everyday life that holds examples of tessellations including carpets, quilt, origami, and fabric patterns. (so yea basically just art)

Reflection :0

Hello there depressed human beings that are reading this blog post. I know for a fact you are depressed because you are so bored that you have nothing else to do besides reading this blog post (except for you, Mr. Gassner) Ok so yea welcome to another blog by you fav blogger (your’s truly :D) Yes I know I’m so honest 😉 Anyways hi this is my reflection of my poem. OMG I know right imagine writing a poem but I have no choice because SOMEONE MADE ME DO IT (you know who you are and I know you are reading this) Ok so my poem is about idiots aka the human race and yes that includes you destroying the world. Ok so my words make the human race feel guilt and they will never come out of their houses and see sunlight again and they will pray and beg God for mercy and they will use their brains to help undo what they did. That is, if they have one… This will inspire people to make the world a better place. Just kidding. You wish. After all, we are humans and we are cruel, and yes that includes you. Anyways, this is my reflection hope you enjoy another blog from your fav blogger 😀 alr see u guys in the next blog and prepared to be roasted (again) Ok yea anyways cya! (btw my poem is down below)

Shattered World
Jasper Li

10,000 hours in this broken world
10,000 hours broken in this world
10,000 hours but who actually cares?
10,000 hours and humans go unaware

100,000 minutes waiting for death
100,000 minutes and gained no strength
100,000 minutes and who remembers?
100,000 minutes waiting for extinction

What will happen years from now?
What will happen to this shattered world?
Human’s selfishness has ended themselves
And in the end, no one remembers

How would we live in this shattered world?
Having regrets in this new broken world
How many regrets will we have?

How many?
How many?

None, for now, because no one thinks of it
But when the thunder dances in our world
We will be forced to face it as it’s our greatest fears

And it will be
And it will be

10,000 hours in this broken world
10,000 hours broken in this world
10,000 hours but who actually cares?
10,000 hours and humans go unaware

100,000 minutes waiting for death
100,000 minutes and gained no strength
100,000 minutes and who remembers?
100,000 minutes waiting for extinction

What have we done?
What have we done?
Now we’re living untouched in this shattered world

Algebra Pattern Yay (cringe alert)

Hello, it’s me your favorite family-friendly blogger and the most active blogger ever yes mhm I’m so honest. Anyways, jokes aside, this is the new blog. oK so in math class, we learned about functions. Functions are a relation in which each input has exactly one output. We also made our own pattern using functions. My pattern starts with 2 blocks horizontally in step 1, then add another 2 blocks horizontally. In step 43, there will be 86 blocks. The equation for my function is 2x=y. Thank you for reading my family-friendly blog post. You can see my slideshow down below.

MathMagic Summative

Hello, I am Jasper and today I will be showing you my MathMagic summative. In this summative, we have to create a math trick. The purpose of this summative is to flex on your peers and parents. In this project, I learned to write an equation in many ways. The part I am most proud of in my MathMagic presentation is the presentation part because I didn’t speak too fast. The part I forgot to do is the explanation of how the trick works. I will be looking forward to getting a 1 on my summative. Thankyou for reading and you can see my summative down below

Scale Drawing Reflection

1. What is the scale factor?

The scale factor is the ratio of the length of a side of one figure to the length of the corresponding side of the other figure

2. When are scale drawings used in the real world?

Planning buildings requires a scale factor because they need to plan out the amount of land needed for the building

3. What did you learn about scale factor?

I learned that the scale factor can be very useful in many different situations

4. What went well in doing the project?

One thing that went well during the project is that I got it done

5. What did you struggle with when doing the project?

One thing I struggled with is drawing lines

How gaming addiction is connected with globalization

Gaming addiction is connected with globalization. Today I will be showing you how gaming addiction is connected with globalization. I did a test. I sent an email to my whole middle school asking them about a game called Hypixel Skyblock, where ranks are the key to measure your social position within the game. the reason I chose this game because I have played it ever since it came out (over a year ago) and I got addicted so I understand this game more than any other game I play. According to the data I collected, 3/4 of the people who play are playing uncountable hours. And about 50% of the people who play don’t even really enjoy the game and they have been playing since last year and they are still playing now.

I asked them why they played. most of them said something like, because my friends are playing or because it’s the most popular game or because other people and YouTubers are playing it.

I have identified this is a globalized company because its games attract players from all over the world and have their own unique culture in this cyber world it created. When I first started, this virtual world was highly competitive but also fun. Players help out each other to achieve their goals. But now, things have changed a lot. Presently, ranks are a lot more valued in the community by players. Now, instead of helping non-ranked players, it has evolved into No Rank, No Rights. And that is why I chose this company to end this social injustice. I have created a social justice protest plan for this incident. I think we should use social media to spread the information, for example, youtube. We should also show the protests to the company itself, and identify powerful people that can help. We need to involve concerned parents and guardians and get experts like psychologists, administrators, etc. Finally, we should gather reliable people to take action and spread information.

These data show that globalization is working and it is brainwashing children’s minds. for example, the reason some of the children play the game is that it’s the most popular game. And it is so popular because it’s a grinding game. you spend hours and hours on getting a slightly higher upgrade. And after that, you’ll want better stuff, which costs more grinding. If the creators didn’t know this will happen, that’s a whole other story. But if it’s their plan all along, then they understand how it can brainwash other people.

Among all the countries, Taiwan is considered a nation where people have better education and a decent income. However, gaming entertainment has been influencing people very much. Playing games online is considered one of the major entertainment in Taiwan now. However, more and more crimes, such as online fraud, also happens in the virtual world. While a lot of parents are still struggling. to get better jobs in order to get a better income for their kids, a lot of kids who are addicted to video games will spend a lot of money in order to get higher scores and better equipment. Hypixel Skyblock is one of those games. For those kids, they just want to have fun. But, this could be considered as a type of money waste to the family. Also, since the kids are way too addicted to the games, social relationships in the family are getting less and less. the relationship among the families is getting loose because people are facing the computer instead of talking to each other face to face. This kind of gaming globalization doesn’t only cause additional money spending to the families but also gurts the family relationship.

People spend a lot of money just to get slightly higher upgrades. All my friends bought ranks for this game. Specifically for this game. Some of them bought MVP+ ranks, which is $35.99. Some bought MVP++ ranks, which require you to buy MVP+ rank first and spend another $7.99 to get MVP++ for 30 days. And after you spend all of that money, you just get access to quick teleportations which you can just teleport to another island in the game. another thing is, sometimes, when the game is in maintenance, you need a rank to play. The same thing happens when the server is full.

A well-known member, ePiCnoOb21 said, Before I start, I just want to say that this isn’t your usual “Hypixel Skyblock is bad” post that complains about the game being boring and repetitive. This post is about a whole new issue altogether. The sole reason why Hypixel Skyblock is bad is that it has increased the hate for non-rank players tenfold.
Before Hypixel Skyblock, non-rank players weren’t hated on that much. Sure, there were some incidents of them being annoying noobs and such, but nothing major at that point.

When Hypixel Skyblock came out, non-hate escalated to a whole new level. Many non-rank players and other people moved from their old games to Hypixel Skyblock, and this made tons of annoying noobs move there too.
The gameplay of Hypixel Skyblock also helped influence non hate. This is because, in this game, non-rank players have many ways of being annoying, like hitting other people’s slayer bosses when they are trying to “help”, begging for items, etc.
Because of this, people have made posts on the forums complaining about how non-rank players are noobs and stuff, and non-rank players have retaliated to these posts, making people hate them even more.

The issue has also been aggravated by the frequent update shutdowns, which allow VIP ranks and above to join, and non-rank players to not join. Many non-rank players have complained about this on the forums, which have increased the hate for non-rank players even more.
Right now, non-hate is at an all-time high, and it will only get worse in the months to come.

Another member said, By being a non in Skyblock, most of the community will ignore you and generally degrade your playing experience. Now many or you may ask, how is this a good thing? This constant attack from the ranked players will inevitably cause you to quit. While you would have been playing Skyblock, you can work and earn money. Instead of grinding zealots you can get money and actually do stuff in life.

However if you decide to buy a rank, you may still experience some of the mental degradation, but will have a much smaller amount. This means that you will actually want to play and will waste more time.

Since by paying 0$ you have 100 percent profit margin on your time, it is a better investment then buying a rank for 5$-40$ and getting a 0$ return on your time.

TLDR: buying rank bad investment.

These are 2 different point of views of the problem. The way this connects to global context is it reveals what people are taught to believe. They don’t have really opinions because other people tell them what to believe from the beginning. That way, people do what other people tell them to do/believe. For example, I was taught to believe that people with the higher ranks have the most power. I use to want a rank so badly. But in the end I can’t get it. I dug more deeply and found out that a rank was not worth it. It just gives you a slightly higher advantage. And like the quote earlier, the person said, buying a rank is bad investment. I still want a rank now, but if I don’t get it I just shake it off and move on. I don’t mind being non-ranked, but getting a slightly higher upgrade would be nice. But I don’t want it as badly as before. And I love it when high rank players calls me hacks when I beat them in a battle 😉

The social injustice that occurred in the cyber world created by Hypixel Skyblock is not unique but exists in many other games. This is due to the fact all companies have to make money and they don’t care how they do it.

This is just an example of the bad effects of globalization. The same things are happening all over the world in companies, brands, etc, not just in games. Globalization tricks people into thinking something is great or worth but it’s actually not. This is why globalization is a bad thing. But I’m not saying globalization is completely a bad thing. there are still positives. example, the world is sharing and trading its resources. many inventions probably won’t exist without globalization. But in the end, people are cruel. So be careful and dig deeper next time before you open your wallet, take out your money, and pay for your new pair of shoes.

Math Progressssssssssssssssssss Reflection

In this blog post, I will be showing you my progress in math class.

First, I will be talking about my improvements in math. first, I improved in doing more ixl. Ixl is a website that helps with all sorts of subjects, not just math. But I mainly use it for math. I also improved my finishing my homework on time these days. it was kind of because Ms. Chagaris’ threat was actually a good threat. Her threat was for us to write a 5 paragraph essay. And personally, I hate writing essays.

Next, I will be talking about my weaknesses in math class. first of all, I really dislike math. So I don’t wanna practice. But my mom told me to suck it up and do it. And she says I’ll get an award if I do ixl. Then it’s doing homework. I said I hate practicing. But I rather do my homework than write a 5 paragraph essay. My grades also went down in math because of not doing homework. And my mom said doing homework is the easiest way to get my grades up.

Now I will be talking about how I will be progressing in math. During the summer, I will be doing 15 minutes of Ixl/day. Also, I will be doing 15 minutes of math worksheet/day. I could also use Khan Academy. I’ve never used it so I want to try it.

Finally, here are some links that will help me practice math.
