COVID-19 Data For Spain and Italy

The data I collected is about COVID-19 cases and deaths in Spain and Italy. First, I would like to share the cases in Spain and Italy. If you look at my graphs down below, you can see that there are 220,325 confirmed cases in Spain and there are 214,457 confirmed cases in Italy.

I don’t think the cases are very accurate because there are probably people that are infected but don’t show any symptoms. There are also people who just don’t follow the rules and the government hasn’t found them yet.

There are countries that have more cases than in other countries. I think this is happening is because of many things. First of all, public events. In some countries, public events might not be canceled. Another thing is population density. In some countries, people are cramped together. In other countries, the country might be popular with tourists. the last reason is simply that people are not following the rules. People might not be wearing masks or people just don’t want to go to quarantine.

Now, I would like to share the deaths and mortality rates in Spain and Italy. In Spain, 25,857 people died. That is 0.1% of the population and 1.2% of the COVID cases. In Italy, 29,684 people died. That is also 0.1% of the population and 1% of the COVID cases. You can see my graphs down below.

Finally, I would like to talk about “flattening the curve.” In Spain, the cases are going down. This means the government has successfully contained the virus. You can see a graph I made down below. The cases in Italy, however, are still going up. the good news is that there’s not a huge spike rising.

Water and Air Balloon Experiment

Question:

Which balloon will be able to last longer when touching a flame: a balloon filled with air or a balloon filled with water?

Hypothesis:

I think the balloon filled with water will last longer than the balloon filled with air because water can absorb heat. This means the water takes the heat instead of the rubber so it takes the balloon longer to pop. I think the balloon filled with air will take 1-3 seconds to pop because there is no water to absorb the heat. This means there is no water to protect the balloon so the fire will instantly pop the balloon.

Variables:

Independent variable: We have one balloon filled with air and one filled with water.

Dependent variable: We are trying to measure how long it takes for a balloon filled with air and a balloon filled with water to pop under 60 seconds.

Controlled variable: We are using the same fire for every balloon, same lighter, timer, same foil, and both balloons are made out of the same material.

Materials:

Lighter
2 balloons
Timer
Water
Foil
Data table
Safety goggles
Have an adult near you

Procedure:

1. Use the lighter to light the foil.
2. Blow one of the balloons.
3. Slowly hold the balloon over the fire.
4. When the balloon touches the flame, start timing.
5. Wait for the balloon to explode (60 seconds max).
6. Collect the data on the data table.
7. Take the other balloon and fill it with water.
8. Slowly hold the balloon over the fire.
9. When the balloon touches the flame, start timing.
10. Wait for the balloon to explode (60 seconds max).
11. Collect the data on the data table.
12. Compare the 2 data.
13. Find out if your hypothesis is correct or not.

Conclusion

My hypothesis was correct. I thought the balloon filled with water will last longer than the balloon filled with air and I was right.

In the experiment, we have a candle lit with fire, we have an air balloon and a water balloon. We first held the air balloon above the fire. our group’s balloon popped at 1.18 seconds. for the water balloon, Ms. Chagaris placed a box over the sink and had us do our experiment on there. our balloon popped at 22.7 seconds. every other group’s water balloon didn’t pop for 60 seconds except for our group and group 5.

I think the water balloon lasted longer than the air balloon because water absorbs heat. water takes the heat from the fire instead of the rubber. the water is blocking the heat. the air balloon popped so fast because there is no water to block the heat for it. the rubber takes all the heat and explodes.

I think we did a pretty good job of proving water absorbs heat in our experiment. however, if we want to do the experiment again, I think we should improve a few things. first of all, we should measure how much air and how much water in each balloon. and, I think our group’s water balloon popped so fast is because the balloon touched the spiky part of the candle. another thing is if we blow a balloon with more air than the others, the rubber expands and could be easier to pop.

Greenhouse lab effect experiment

Question
can a cup with a transparent lid trap more heat than a cup without a transparent lid?

Hypothesis
a cup with a transparent lid can trap more heat than the one without the lid because it acts like a greenhouse. the heat can get in but the transparent lid keeps the heat from escaping.

Results

Conclusion
my hypothesis is correct. the cup with a lid trapped more heat than the cup with no lid. the cup with a lid is hotter than the cup without the lid by 2 degrees.

in the experiment, we had 1 heat lamp and we put both of the cups under the lamp at the same time. we started a timer for 15 minutes. we checked the thermometer every 1 minute. the end result for the one with a lid is 32 degrees. the one with no lid is 30 degrees. so the one with a lid rose 2 degrees.

the cup with lid was able to trap more heat than the one with no lid because it is how greenhouse works. plastic are insulators, so they have low conductivity, so thats why when heat passes through plastic, they get trapped.

How To Video blog post

Hello and today Kevin and I made a video about how to multiply and divide fractions with mixed numbers. it was hard, mainly because if you made a mistake, you have to restart the whole thing over again. it took us several tries but we got there. you can see our video down below
