Digital literacy is the ability to find, evaluate, utilize, share, and create content using information technologies and the Internet. – Cornell University
Why is digital literacy important? The skill of being able to read information and pick out what is important is only becoming more critical.
Another important skill is learning how to learn.
During their unit studying the Incan Empire, Grade 5 students wrote a narrative about a hike to Machu Picchu.
A Google Doc with directions assignment directions was created and shared with the students. The doc directed them to a website with the information the needed.
It also had questions to guide the writing:
You need to go to the website above and try to answer the following questions:
- How many days is the hike?
- What city do you start in?
- What do you need to bring?
When giving students an assignment, try giving the directions digitally.
