How Can You Practice Your Math Skills on Your Own?

As a sixth-grader, you are old enough to know your strengths and weaknesses in math.  As we go over the NWEA math test results, you can identify your strengths and weaknesses easily at the beginning of the year.  Plus, by this age, you probably have already figured out which type of math problems you struggle with or which type of math problems are easier for you to solve.  You know if you like to solve real-world problems or if it is more difficult for you to read about a mathematical situation and plan how to solve the problem in your own way.  But you can always practice your math skills on your own.

One great place to practice math is going to the Khan Academy website.  There you will find tutorials, games and even online math classes – oh – and there are even other tutorials in other subjects.  Also, you can go to a section in that website that connects with your NWEA score.  It is the “mapper” section.  I found it by doing a simple search.  After you get your NWEA math scores, you can just simply follow the instructions and you can practice problems in different categories at your level.  Here are some other places you can go to practice your math skills:

  1. Google Classroom – I always include a hyperlink doc. which includes websites, games, and videos that allow you to practice for the particular unit we are studying.
  2. Blog Post – I created a blog post before in which I list practice websites.
  3. Math Playground – Kids tend to like Math Playground as it has so many online games.  You can choose your level and the math topic you want to practice.
  4. ixl.com – You can also go to your ixl.com Online account and play some of the games to practice.
  5. Google Search – Do your own Google Search for games to play, online tests, or tutorials for the types of problems you would like to practice.

Remember that in middle school, we try to prepare you to be knowledgeable and an inquirer.  You can always choose to study or practice beyond the four walls of the classroom.  Also, if you have any questions, don’t forget to ask your friendly math teacher.
