Recently, our literature class has been studying pieces of literature related to the Hiroshima bomb. Seizing this opportunity, we’re arranged a short trip to visit the 5th graders and teach them how to make paper cranes, a symbol of peace developed in Hiroshima days, in memory of the 228 Peace Day. This is my first time teaching to a younger group of kids, and I was so excited. There are 4 of us in my literature class, and we were assigned different jobs to make the process of teaching as smooth as possible. We asked the 5th graders to write down a wish on the wings of the peace cranes and strung them all together into a long chain. I saw some of the students’ wishes while stringing together the cranes, and they deeply touched me. One of the children wrote “Best Wishes to Wuhan” in Chinese, and I got so emotional by the degree of global awareness and care he has already adopted towards the world. I don’t think my thoughts were that mature at his age. Overall, this is definitely a very special and unique experience. It made the Peace Memorial Holiday this year extra unforgettable and special. Events like the Hiroshima bombing, the February 228 Incident, and the COVID-19 disease are tragic events that have happened in the world, and I hope for nothing else than peace for all the victims and affected.
