I’ve been thinking of what to do for my CAS project since it was introduced to us at the beginning of the semester. I’ve always thought of myself as anyone besides a natural leader; the joint responsibility, the communication needed, the balance between being over-dominant and leading others… all those coming together makes me really hesitant to start on a project.

Last weekend, my volleyball team and I traveled to Taichung for the TISSA Final Tournament. I met up with some of my friends studying there, and we started chatting again as I headed back to Kaohsiung. She was talking to me about their school film promo videos for their sports team. That idea really attracted me. I thought of the basketball season that is just beginning to start and thought that was a FANTASTIC idea! Our school has never produced any promotional videos for the varsity teams to my knowledge, and I could be the first one to do that! Plus, I’ve always been interested in video editing, and I thought this would be the perfect idea for my first CAS project. Therefore, immediately after this idea popped into my head, I began to look into some other promo videos online to gain inspiration for how I want my video to be like.

The first video I referenced to was the promotional video Morrison Academy Taichung made for their volleyball girl’s team this year.

I like the hype beats they incorporated as the background music and how they incorporated motions of the ball to make the video feel more lively. The idea of including game footage is nice, but if I’m doing so, that means I will have to find game footage from last year (since we haven’t played any games yet and I want to post it around the players photoshoot day), and I don’t think that is very inclusive for new players joining the team this year.

I then looked up several other videos on Youtube for more inspiration and ideas. The next video I looked at is a basketball promotional video created by Mid Buchanan High School in 2017.

The video was really professional with high-quality game footage and other things, therefore I found it slightly more unrelatable as it is quite clear that some kind of photography professional was hired to produce this video. Despite that, I found it really powerful to mess with angles and include zoom-in shots to emphasize the atmosphere and impression of the video. I also like how they used a dark background with light shining on the subject to create a sense of focus. These are all things I will take into consideration when planning out my video.
