This week, Ms. Melnick offered to help me out on my volleyball training, which turns out to be really useful and helpful. To showcase my learning, I made it into a short video attached below.

At first, we practiced at the balcony of the classroom and focused just on the toss of the serve. The toss is the most important part of the serve. The server would need to toss a straight ball with suitable height in order to administer a successful and strong serve. Therefore, Ms. Melnick taught me to just focus on the consistency of the tosses. Every toss should be exactly the same. This reminded me of the free throws we have to do in basketball. In basketball, free throws are basically “free” points, that’s what my coach always says, and we have to make sure that we have the same ritual and form every time in order to make it a splash. Keeping that in mind, I made sure to toss the ball a step in front of me at a height where the bottom of the palm of my (straight) dominant arm can exactly hit at.

After I feel like I’ve got the hang of it, I decided to do some receiving practices, although it’s technically not a part of my CAS experience. I realized that my biggest problem right now is that only my arms are moving when I’m receiving the ball when instead the knees and the whole body should be moving in correspondence to produce the curve of the ball. I still need to work more on that.
