Why is he a hypocrite?

In the story “The Crucible”, the character John Procter is a hypocrite in disobeying the values of the “ten commandments” in Christianity. He secretly broke one of the rules by having adultery. It was strictly forbidden in accordance to the holy bible. His name is synonymous with honor and integrity, well respected amongst the society in Salem. Yet, he still had an affair with Abigail Williams.

A hypocrite is defined by “pretends to have virtues, morals, or religious beliefs, principle.etc, that he, or she does not actually possess, especially a person whose action belie stated beliefs”.

John Procter is a hypocrite because he pretended to have virtues of every belief in Christianity. He knows about the 10 commandments, and strived to live up to his reputation as a simple, just, and obedient farmer that serves the town and God well.

However, having adultery when one of the ten commandments strictly forbids it, especially doing lechery. What a way to belie your stated belief! During a dialogue in Act two, when Reverend Hale questioned him if he knows the ten commandments. He answers all of the nine correctly, except the adultery forbidden commandment.

This connects to an event that happened during the Cold War, spies! During the Cold War, spies infiltrated in and out of both Communist nations and Capitalistic nations. This is in fact directed towards the British, American, and Soviet Union. They are very well known for their intel gathering and especially in counter espionage activities.

During the Cold War, the American-British joint counter espionage group successfully caught multiple Soviet spies in a row by cracking the venona documents. Some Soviet spies were condemned to prison, some escaped, and even got killed with death sentence. Some of the most famous names included Harry Gold, Klaus Fuchs, and obviously, the Rosenberg family who ended up being executed.

Now wait a minute, how does this have anything to do with hypocrites? Well, it’s pretty simple. When you become a member of the American military or government personnel, you have to swear a pledge of allegiance to serve for the benefit of U.S against foreign and domestic enemies who tries to harm the homeland.

By spying for the enemy, aren’t you technically helping the United State’s foreign enemy by becoming a domestic enemy yourself? I mean, you sworn to protect the U.S, and now you’re spying for the USSR, who is arguably the U.S most hated country perhaps to this day in history. You’re giving them information that could help them invent better weapons and techs, supply them to their Communist allies so that they can kill more allies of U.S and even more U.S military serving across the continents.

This connects to hypocrites because you’re doing something completely opposite of what you’re pretending to do. “Pretends to have virtue, morals, or religious beliefs, principle.etc”. I thought the principle was to not do anything to harm the U.S. I think they disobeyed that by becoming a spy.

  1. I find your point of view very interesting, are the values of the people of Salem defined by the ten commandments. Is religion values non-changeable over time? Do people in a specific religious society have to fit in with all the norms and principles?

  2. I like how you have connected John Proctor’s hypocrisy with the espionages during the Cold War. I agree with what you meant about people betraying their values not only to themselves, but also to others.
