The Impact of Science and Weather Forecasts

How have technological advances improved weather predictions?

Weather is mainly formed by three main factors: temperature, water, and wind.  However, Weather is a complex interaction between many systems.  Predicting the weather can be tricky.  There are weather scientists called meteorologists who study and predict the weather, however, their predictions are not always 100% correct.  Luckily, there have been many advances in weather technology that help meteorologists study and predict weather more accurately such as weather satellites, weather radars, and weather balloons.  Furthermore, there are other meteorologists who take risks like Hurricane Hunters and Storm Chasers.

Hurricane Hunters fly special planes into the middle of hurricanes  (or typhoons).  The planes are equipped with several trained scientists and lots of equipment to gather data about the tropical storm as it is happening.  The data they collect is sent to special weather data centers in which other meteorologists can organize it, and send it to news stations where other meteorologists report this news in order to warn the public.

Storm Chasers are weather scientists who look for weather conditions that might bring terrible thunderstorms and tornadoes.  They have special cars that can help protect them from the deadly speeding winds of a tornado, but they still need to be able to quickly get out of the day when the tornado is too dangerous.  Storm Chasers also carry emergency equipment because they are usually some of the first responders on the scene when a tornado damages a community.

In science, we broke into teams and learned about different weather technologies and scientists like storm chasers and hurricane hunters.  You can see the Google Slides that our class made about these different technologies that help forecasters to understand more about weather and make better predictions.
