Who is Gene Marie Chagaris?

It all started after I completed a four-month immersion program in Costa Rica. I was in university and I thought that if I studied Spanish, I could be a better teacher for the diverse population of San Diego, California. I had taken French in secondary school and in university, but Spanish would benefit me more in San Diego. So, I studied in a full immersion program in Costa Rica. After this experience, I was a changed person.

After I was finished with this immersion program in Costa Rica, I went back to my life in San Diego and I found everything to be so predictable. I missed the everyday challenge of communicating in a second language to order food or to tell the taxi driver where to go or reading in a different language to understand directions or subway maps. There was no “unknown” for me in San Diego. I realized that this language program in Costa Rica was just the beginning of the rest of my life.

Of course living abroad allows one to learn about new cultures and new languages, but I especially love the way it challenges us by putting us in unfamiliar situations. This helps me learn, it gives me confidence, and it helps me to become open-minded about the world around me. Besides traveling, I also love teaching because I love helping people. Therefore, I put these two passions together and I decided to teach overseas. That was more than twenty years ago.

I’m a creative and adventurous person by nature, plus combined with my abilities to understand children and help them succeed, I have become successful in my international teaching career. I have experience teaching in Saipan, Japan, Indonesia, Venezuela, and Colombia. Now I am here at KAS in beautiful Taiwan and I LOVE IT!  I’ve been here since 2012. I started teaching in the upper elementary and moved to middle school in 2017 to teach grade 6 science and math.

My favorite aspect of working at KAS is the relationships I can have with students, teachers, and parents. KAS feels like a big family, and I am honored to be part of the MS team. I’m sure with everyone’s effort, we can make it THE BEST YEAR EVER!
