Think Like a Scientist Reflection

Statement of Inquiry

Scientists think methodically using the scientific method to help them make connections and search for patterns or evidence, which in turn, assists them in solving problems more efficiently.

This was our first unit in science.  It was about the scientific method. Now that we are finished with the unit, I will reflect on my own attitude, behavior, and progress in science.  I will discuss my progress using 3 ATL Skills:  Self-Management Skills, Communication Skills and Social Skills.

Self-Management

During this unit, I think I did a good job with self-management skills.  I always use my time wisely in class.  I like to try to get all of my work done and if I need help, I ask the teacher for clarification.  I try not to distract other people and I am very responsible with all of my homework.  Also, I studied for the test so I think I did my best using my self-management skills.

Communication Skills

I tried my best using communication skills in science.  If you look at my notebook, you can see that I take good notes and they are organized.  Also, I am learning how to use the correct science vocabulary when I am writing lab reports or explaining something in science.   Last, I think I can learn to add more specific details to my answers when I am writing in science.

Social Skills

During this unit, I really did try to use positive social skills as much as possible.  When the teacher asks us to discuss things in our groups, I always participate and share my ideas.  I am also trying my best to get some of the shy people in the class to share their ideas if they don’t speak.  I am good at helping others when they don’t know how to do something on the computer.  I think I can try to work on speaking less.  Sometimes I talk too much and then other people lose their concentration in class.

The Learner Profile

I think that I was a risk-taker in science class because I always try to raise my hand and volunteer or share answers in front of people.  I am a risk-taker when I do this because sometimes I am shy and I am afraid of getting the wrong answer, but I think I tried my best to share.

I was being an inquirer when I did research for my experiment.  Before, I used to just ask Google a question and write down the first answer I see, but now I am looking for a reliable scientific resource from the internet that will give me true information.  I can use that information to try to explain my results.

I was being a communicator in science because I studied new science vocabulary words such as independent variable, dependent variable, controlled variables, inference, prediction, and the scientific method.  I did a good job on my test when I was explaining my answers and I also did a great job on my lab report.  I worked hard at trying to write it like the example and I tried to discuss my reasons rather than just stating a quick answer without an explanation.
