Supposedly it’s 12 AM, and you’re still staring at your undone homework. Swipe your mouse right. You scanned over your half written proposal for Student Council. Then switch to another screen. Your friend was still waiting for you to reply her message. While you try to do your utmost to everything, you unlikely have any time to be reflective.
Students are rarely willing to know the perks of being a wallflower during parties. Parents, in the meantime, expect their child(ren) to perform well both academically and in extra-curricular activities also known as ECAs. Trying to be balanced is unlikely a way to make yourself a balanced and healthy person.
Student Council (StuCo) is considered as an extra-curricular club that trains students in leadership, organization, and cooperation. According to Emily Wu, the current Middle School StuCo president, joining the club is a great opportunity for students to learn to collaborate and coordinate activities. However, it’s actually pretty tough when it really comes to creating and setting up an actual event, according to the other officers. StuCo members are responsible for preparing and purchasing items in order to make the event as perfect as possible.
As the StuCo president, Emily is also a perfectionist who works meticulously on her school works and strives for good grades. Occasionally, she sleeps at 1AM or later. Usually, she wakes up around 7, but sometimes she came in late for her first block. Even though she has decent grades and was rarely sleepy during class time, her life is still not healthy and balanced with less than six hours of sleep.
On the other hand, Emily belongs to more than one squad. Socializing is definitely an important part of her student career. Socializing, ECAs, and school work are all significant to her. Therefore, what should be prioritized? According to a school’s purpose, which is to enable students to learn, school work should be the first one in terms of priority.
“With a lot of work in hand, sometimes I multitask to accomplish a lot of tasks at once, ” stated Emily. Multitasking, however, is the first bad habit that should be changed. It’s problematic. According to the research made by Stanford University, multitasking damages your brain and makes you less productive. With scientific evidence, researchers also found that your EQ could decrease while multitasking.
In order to be balanced and healthy, 7-8 hours of sleep is essential, and at least half an hour of exercising per day is recommended. To not lower your IQ and EQ, save more time, and be more productive, multitasking should be forbidden. By doing so, more time should be possibly saved for you to do additional activities. Then you are one step closer to being superior and being healthy!
