2020 may. – welcome to the roaring 20s!

“In light of the coronavirus, we are sorry to inform you that this event has been canceled…” Are you tired of hearing and reading this line over and over again? Because same.

But worry not, because our senior prom is not getting affected by this!

The Roaring Twenties, the prom that seniors had long-anticipated, is finally going to be a dream come true. In order to cope with the current situation, creative solutions were a must-have. Unlike our typical prom hosted in a venue outside of KAS, the government has restricted the maximum number of people in an assembly to less than 100 people. In response to this, we had to host our prom on campus, which was an unprecedented decision. Throughout the process, I was able to explore creativity and service. As the leaders of the Prom Committee (or…if you must, Prommittee), Sandy and I strived to bring seniors the best prom possible. Throughout the process, we were serving the seniors directly by proving and advocating that prom is made possible in spite of the pandemic. Personally, I strongly believe that prom is a way for us underclassmen to serve the seniors, especially the members of StuCo. It is a celebration of their years of hard work and the end of high school. By planning prom to accommodate the seniors’ needs accordingly, we are preserving their right to enjoy their prom.

The entire process was extensive. However, just to document a few, I was mainly in charge of logistics, where I took charge of arranging the invitations, seating charts, and RSVP, etc. This involved creativity, especially on the seating chart portion, since we wanted to match the table themes with settings in the book The Great Gatsby in order to create the roaring 20’s vibes. I also helped out with creating the frames for the photobooth. These allowed me to showcase creativity.

More importantly, the process taught me the importance of teamwork. Dating back to January, we began the prom-planning process by sending out surveys to seniors for them to choose a theme, visiting venues to note down the possible set-ups, and deciding the buffet menu, just to name a few. Throughout the process, I recognized the challenges faced in initiating a big event like this: to estimate the time needed for each task, keep up with communication between members, and tackle unforeseen issues. As shown below, it was a great time to realize teamwork by allocating the jobs to each member, which involved exploring the strengths of each individual and put them in the most suitable position.
