Discrimination Against Refugees Should Be Eradicated in the Society Through Education

Persuade Me: Speech Summative

For this speech unit, students were able to train multiple skills. At the beginning of the unit, students learned about rhetorics, or the art of using words effectively and persuasively. The three persuasion appeals, coined by Aristotle, were learnt and used throughout this unit, which are logos, ethos, and pathos. Logos is logical or factual appeals. Ethos stands for characteristics and credibility. Pathos is emotional appeals. At the beginning of the unit, students were asked to choose a passage to read it out loud in front of a group of classmates as a practice. After that, students were given several resources that effectively helped to enhance their speech skills, which include TEDTalks and articles that educated us about the three rhetoric.

Finally, for the speech unit summative, each student was asked to choose a topic they’re compassionate about. To start with, everyone was required to write a one-sentence speech proposal that includes a call to action that responds to the problem and centers on the audience. Later on, students researched on the issue and categorized the information based on the rhetorics. They then constructed their speech outline with a hook, context of the issue, possible solutions, the best solution they proposed, and a strong conclusion. Last but not least, the outline was transformed into an actual speech. Students then delivered their speeches in front of the whole class and were given feedbacks.

As shown below, here’s my speech that stands against refugee discrimination, produced through the steps stared above.
