What was the hardest part of this task? Easiest?
I think the hardest part for me in this task is figuring out how I am going to the calculate and measure the entire experiment. I figured it out with background knowledge from other science classes and research online and ultimately settled with two formulas and 2 different apps to test it. The 2 formulas consist of the formula for sound velocity and the formula for the relationship between panpipe length and sound, while the 2 apps consist of an app that measures certain frequencies while the other measures average decibels.
The easiest part for me, I think, is when I had to construct the pan flute. I think it was really fun to create a pan flute with my grandfather at a construction site with all the cool looking equipment that the time passed pretty quickly, so overall I find it really fun.
One of the Approaches to Learning (ATL) suggested for Science in the MYP is stated below:
Social skills–Practise giving feedback on the design of experimental methods
Discuss the statement above as you reflect on your planning and building of your instrument.
I didn’t really do much with the Social Skills ATL since I mostly did everything with myself except for constructing the pan flute with my grandfather. I did, however, discuss my calculation method with my science teacher from a class I took who gave me lots of meaningful feedback on whether I did the calculation process correctly and discussed just how accurate the apps I used are.
How successful was your instrument in the 5 tests? Which test(s), if any, did your instrument fail? Be honest! Discuss your ideas on how to improve your instrument.
Overall, my tests were pretty successful! Every result matched my prediction, the only ‘failure’ I guess there are are how I would much prefer using a much accurate frequency measuring app since the app often estimates to certain degrees of Hz when measuring the frequency. I also think that if I can figure out how to create a silent wind blower or something I can much better control the Db in the second experiment, where I test how different diameters of panpipes accept loudness.
Discuss why you built the instrument you did? Do you play a similar instrument? Was it an instrument you thought would be easy to be successful building, intrigued or challenged you?
I built the instrument because I thought it would be the easiest instrument to do. I often focus a lot on the lab report, so I needed an instrument easy to build, which was why I picked the pan flute. The physics of the instrument wasn’t too hard but the calculation process really challenged myself, and although I did figure it out eventually, it did intrigue me a lot.
