Trust, Communication, and the Hong Kong Protests

Unit Summary

In this unit, our Language and Literature class delved into multiple aspects of public and persuasive speaking. From speechwriting to rhetorical devices and breathing techniques, everything we’ve learned about and practiced ultimately culminated in a final summative in which we had to perform a speech to the audience about a current issue that we felt strongly about and could propose a resolution for. I ended up choosing to discuss the issue of the 2019 Hong Kong Protests, a subject that had affected me and had led to talks and arguments by even the people around me, and through research, writing, and practice, I created a persuasion speech about why I believe that Beijing has to be able to create a line of communication to Hong Kong to make peace, regain trust and respect for each other. While I do still feel like there was room to improve for the future in terms of what I’ve accomplished, I have nonetheless made a lot of progress by the end of the unit.
