In this assignment, we find the tension in the city and take a photo of it. An example of the tension would be rural vs urban in the city. Some buildings are never refreshed and some newer buildings have modern integrity. Throughout this unit, we learned how to identify tension and what it could be; as well as what role tension could play in the society and how it could be seen in multiple perspectives.
In this photo, Renzo Wu contrasts symbolisms of the tension between modern and tradition through visual details such as the brightness of the objects or the composition of the image. The theme of this image is composed based on a few visual details that symbolize modern and tradition. The details could be seen in many ways and in different directions. An example would be on the left side of the image everything is shining with lights of the banners. On the right side of the image, it’s a dark metal structure that is an old business. In this image, it’s looking at the street from the side that the old building is on. The rural and traditional building that symbolizes the old. This goes to show that the things could change on a large scale over time. What’s once a core business that a man owns, may now be a forgotten building that isn’t seen, even though it’s a big structure. On the left side of the image, there are numerous buildings with modern integrity that symbolize the new and advanced. One of the details is that it keeps on going, the lights keep following up to symbolize the modern society advancing non-stop. The modern society is what people are living in, it expresses the fact that people would adapt advancement as a whole, it’s just the matter of fact that they might not all move at the same pace. The entire left side is still in business while the right is in a complete darkness. Another small detail that supports and really shows the tension is that all the cars are going towards the direction that the lights are following up to. The number of cars to be seen going towards the vanishing point of the lights is more than the cars that come towards the part that the light begins, which is the café building on the very left of the image with yellow lights. This symbolism shows that society is adapting towards the modern, not a lot of people moves in reverse to the traditional or the start point of advancement. The tension begins because those who live a traditional life may see the advancement of modern society as a negative, and stops to adapt to it. The two sides of opinion both have its own pluses and minuses. Some might think that without the traditions, the place is completely different and not the same society. However, others might argue that they’re all about change. Having advancements to their society from influences only improves their culture and expand their limits.
