Final Paper
TEDTalk Analysis #2
Here are the analyses I did. Before doing the Final Papers, I wrote an analysis of Liza Donnelly’s TEDTalk. I analyzed the humour and stylistic techniques that she utilizes to make her cartoon. She wanted to gave her take on the social issue of gender inequality. She portrays the social issue with humour techniques like satire, irony, dark humour, etc. Humour techniques can help with getting ideas across, sometimes social issues can be hard to discuss, and using humour techniques to embed the message is an easier way to communicate the idea. And all artists have a specific style that belongs to them. For example, Liza Donnelly has a simple but realistic style that she does in her cartoon to convey the idea clearly and strongly.
I then analyzed the work of Patrick Chappette in my final paper. He is very unique in his way of creating cartoons. He wants to promote the power of cartoons and how they can be used in the correct way. He went to countries that are divided and gathered cartoonists from both sides to share opinions through a cartoon workshop. He wants people to realize the cartoons that are used to spread messages are used for a reason. They’re an easy tool to communicate, bringing the difficult messages across to the other side and sharing opinions with less of a threat.
This unit connects to our previous unit of The Doll’s House. Creators share give their takes on a global issue, like gender inequality, through a piece of work. In the previous unit, we took a look at a play by Henrik Ibsen, he portrayed his view of gender inequality by showing the daily interactions of a husband and a wife. And eventually, the wife had to speak her mind and release the burden she has taken. In the political cartoons that we looked at, artists and cartoonists have a very unique style of creating art, embedding messages and sharing their opinions.
