I found the article that I read most interesting because Alexander tells us an event that most of us have probably not thought of or heard of. Alexander told the story of how prisoners are suffering in the midst of the pandemic while people began to show that we view the prisoners as people that are less than who we are. She explains that there are prisoners who deserve to be let go. Some of them are kept in the prisoner just to be there as their purpose of being locked up has been served. Prisoners are given a poor condition to live in while the virus attacks everyone. Even when the prisoners get sick, they still only receive the most basic treatment, if not, less than what the basic care should be. It was scary to see how people were suffering in the prisoners while those on the outside bypassed the thought of those who are locked up, only because they are locked up. She tells the story of this prisoner’s interaction with a nurse that “volunteered” to help out those prisoners during the pandemic. However, despite the nurse coming with good intentions, she dehumanized the prisoners in her mind as well. She thought that the prisoners should be grateful for what they have received, which is nothing close to sufficient health care. She was also fine if they were sick, as long as they didn’t cause more problems. So the juxtaposition of the people was shown within the nurse. People think they care but they don’t understand what is actually going on.
