Dear Mr. Jim Jordan,
Our names are Renzo and Claudia, both sophomores in Kashousing American School. Our group includes several of the few survivors of the recent mass school shooting that took place in Kaohsiung and we are traumatized from the horrible experience. We would like the rules to be changed so this would not happen again. We do not think this is okay as many of those who were dead we witnessed. It was just terrifying to see other classmates being killed and injured in front of us.
The reason why we are writing this email to you is that we think guns are very dangerous to people around the world. Innocent people were killed and injured because of guns. Allowing guns activates the thought in the criminals’ minds to cause violence. We happen to be in one of the tragedies caused by one of the criminals. After looking through the National Key Vote, we found that you were against gun control, by voting Nay for STOP School VIolence Act of 2018. Thus we would like you to rethink your decision and reevaluate. We don’t believe it is the correct way to stand for gun rights. Instead of supporting gun rights, we believe the best solution to stop gun violence is by adding stricter gun laws, such as “Red Flag Law”
An example of “Red Flag Law”, the suspected gunman who is 19 years old, a former student of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, had attracted the attention of local police on numerous occasions before his attack. Officers, however, never pursued a criminal charge that might’ve otherwise opened the door for his guns to be seized. With the “Red Flag Law”, police can remove guns from dangerous individuals before harm is done. According to Robin Lloyd, the director of government affairs at the Giffords Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence. According to federal statistics, the effectiveness of “Red Flag Law” in preventing suicides, which account for 60 percent of all firearms deaths in the country and around one-third of all fatal shootings in Illinois. This shows that “Red Flag Law” can reduce the rate of suicide and gun violence. The amount of damage a gun could do is so much higher than other weapons and it isn’t a good thing for the people. Therefore, with this example, we would hope that you would be considering establishing stricter gun laws to prevent students like us from dying and getting harmed by guns.
Sincerely,
Renzo Wu and Claudia Chang
