There were challenges during this experience. They were to discuss ideas and to collaborate with another human being. Initially, we had different opinions on the topic and social issues we were aiming for, as well as the meaning and display of the makeup. We had different ideas. We had to talk it out and discuss which way best describes our intended meanings and our aesthetics. Moreover, we had to work on scheduling because we did not have in-school equipment. We got the makeup tools, spotlight, and camera from outside school on our own. I learned how initiating a plan is not as easy as I thought, especially under the condition of COVID-19 and immense schoolwork.
Through the experience, I learned how collaboration could be made into a creative work that I never thought of. I never thought that the interplay of makeup and social issues, makeup art could publicize the voices of minorities and how social issues could be illustrated through artistic expression like makeup.
My stereotypical view of makeup was about beauty and trendy fashion. This has shaped me view of makeup to be only focusing on the outer appearance of a person. This experience demonstrated me how makeup could have positive connotation and meaning behind it. It is almost like an artwork. As an IB art student, I found that related to my pieces of artworks. Eye shadow and colorful powder are like paint and brushes. Makeup artist could decide the colors in their palette and express the meaning like a visual artist.
After the experience, I found myself could relate deeper with art and other kinds of artistic expressions. I also found myself questioning the meaning of art, whether visually, conceptually, or theoretically, a work could be called art.
This idea inspired me of how influencers and other celebrities can speak up social issues through their makeup and fashion trend. With their creditability, immense followers on social media, and ability to quickly grab attention from the public, they could be an effective tool and speak for social issues as iconic characters. Overall, through the experience, I have developed abilities to better work with others, and gained values and new perspectives on makeup and art.
