With the ongoing pandemic, #MeToo movement, and #BlackLivesMatter, my peer Lina and I decided to initiate a CAS project centered around global issues and to speak for justice. We were brainstorming ideas for a creative way to communicate with the public about these serious issues. We identified our strengths, in which Lina is good at makeup, and I am good at art and design. Likewise, we both use social media on a daily basis, and we realized the power of digital media, and it could be one of the best methods to spread information quickly and effectively. Therefore, we decided that we could start an Instagram account to post makeups to raise awareness of social issues. Besides COVID-19, #MeToo, and BLM, we thought about issues such as domestic violence, climate change, breast cancer, etc. We thought about how each week we could post a makeup centered around one theme issue.
The next steps are to plan out the schedule for posts, the contents, layout, and design of the posts. We discussed our roles and shared responsibility in this project. Lina will be responsible for doing the makeup. I will be responsible for modeling and making the template for the Instagram posts. As for shared responsibility, we will both be brainstorming ideas and the content of the posts.
To conclude, the purpose of this CAS project is to bring to public attention the importance of these issues through creative makeup. To the IB curriculum, this project addresses two strands: creativity and service. Our goals are to spread positivity and accurate information to the public with creative content and aesthetic and attention-grabbing visualizations. We hope to reach as many audiences as possible. We planned this to be a 1-2 months project.
