Think this do that?

Hypocrite: One who says to have a particular belief but behaves differently that contracts with one’s belief.

I think everyone has seen people like this, who say that they think this way but do that way.

Reverend Parris in The Crucible was one of the great examples of a hypocrite. Back in history, there were also political hypocrites shown in policies that were supposed to promise the people. This post is going to tell you some hypocrites exist in our daily life that you may not have thought of.

In The Crucible:

Reverend Parris says that he whipped for Betty, but kept worrying and even turned angry about how his reputation may be ruined.

US History:

During the immigration time, the US said that they welcomed all immigrants and would provide an excellent life within free speech,  education, and free lunch. In fact, they filtered the immigrants to only allow “superior genes” to enter America. Later, nativism and racism occupies a long period of time in US history and those stereotypes even exist now in modern-day society.

Modern Hypocrites:

– When your mom tells you how bad is it to keep looking at screens and to stop using your phone, but at the same time she is scrolling through hers. She knows the disadvantages of exposure in blue light but just can’t deny the attractiveness of technology.

Blogger, Cellphone, Office, Business, Notebook

– Saying how gossiping is frustrated and immature, and pass a gossip to one another. You know that gossiping is bad but you just accidentally tell a secret to somebody, or you know it’s bad but you just want to share it with your best friend who has nothing to do with the secret’s affair.

– Saying to protect the globe but actually create many wastes, e.g. promote using metal straws but actually create more wastes on other resources: paper, tissue, water, food.

– Some people just never vote but keep complaining about how the government should be better when on the other side they did not do any contribution.

  1. Hi Heloise!
You gave both modern and historical evidence to compare back to the topic of the hypocrite. After reading your block, I found an interesting idea that – is being a hypocrite always bad? I mean, hypocrite means a person not “acting as their true self”, but what if this “fake-self” is very important to the people. For example. a person’s behavior at home is intelligent and cautious, yet at school, he is not an intelligent but acts more freely. Would you consider this person a hypocrite too?

  2. Hey! Heloise~ I like how you use the modern hypocrites to give the readers examples, I think it helps a lot for me, which makes me understand the meaning of hypocrites better. I personally think that most of the parents are hypocrites because they tell their children not do this but they can do that. I also can see the connection between The Crucible and US history, it’s very interesting that you use the subject that we’re learning now as an example. However, I have one question to ask you. Have you ever met a person who is a hypocrite?
