Pairing up with partners from 12,233 km away

The Happy Prince movie script

Storyboard

Pairing up with partners from 12,233 km away is an exciting opportunity. However, due to the time difference, long distance, and lack of communication which behind the project, there might be an unfavorable partnership, but there might also have possibility of beautiful outcomes.

Real time and distance difference?

There are some unavoidable factors of group projects especially oversea. First, because of being far away from each other and upside down day and night schedule, when one needs response from partners, they have to wait for their reply the next day. On top of that, we don’t know each other at all. We only saw each other on the videos and we had to develop a movie afterwards. There are lots of gaps between us that cause the lack of communication. However, from this project, I’ve learned and observed some interesting relationships in group work.

The Holy Ghost

Excluding the unavoidable time and distance differences, waiting for work to be done is one main factor that cause a less satisfactory teamwork: Being passive rather than active, which is one of the most common weakness of teenagers. This type of people can be called as the “silent partner”, who just choose to be careless and nonchalant to the project. They just want to let the project go through and let it be.

Heterogeneity?

Not all people like to possess the attitude of just letting it rotten in group work, there will always be someone standing out from a group who manages the whole team work. Some people are likely to take a leading role to stimulate more interactions and conversations than others. In this project, the partners don’t know each other’s personality, living environment, culture, daily habits, performance in school, and their social life, unless they have deeper conversations with each other. It is hard for us to work together because we don’t know each other. We might be people with total different personalities, or we might have similar personalities, but we just don’t know. Usually we would not like to get to know each other more with assigned school partners because we think it is just a school project, and we just want to get the work done.

Despite we are a small team of three, I can still observe some characteristics of each person and some interesting relationships going on in group project. However, whoever contributes more or less, whoever gets an A or an F, the responsibility falls on all parties to communicate with each other to make things work. Sometimes it is easier to blame on the person who contributes less, but it is actually not true. Both sides should push each other to do the “group” work.

Not everyone can be productive throughout their whole life. I myself wasn’t always a good partner in group projects and I understand that sometimes you just have lots of affairs going on or you are just not in the mood to do it. I think how to interact and communicate in a group is an important lesson in life, not just in school but including in the future when you go to work. You never know what kind of partner you will encounter, you just have to adapt it and deal with it. These are life experiences that help you grow and expand your insights. Overall, it is a valuable lesson for me and I expect myself to be a better partner in the future at any fields.
