Emily Dickinson was born on December 10th, 1830 in Amherst, Massachusetts. She had one sister and one brother. When she was young, she had an active social life. She had a lot of friends. She enjoyed baking, gardening, singing and playing the piano.
When she was older, she became very shy. She had a quiet life. She lived most of her life in her parents’ house and she didn’t like to meet her friends. She just traveled very little.
Emily began to write the poem in her twenties, but she just shared only a few of her poems, and only with a few people, like her sister and close friends. Now, she is considered one of the towering figures of American literature. In 1862, she sent a few poems and asked for advice to an essayist named Thomas Wentworth Higginson, but he didn’t say anything, because he couldn’t understand her poems.
In 1864 and 1865, she had to have medical attention for an eye condition, so she traveled to Boston. Then, she returned to Amherst. While she underwent treatment, she lived with her cousins. Because her beloved nephew Gilbert died, she never recovered from his death, so soon, she became ill. She died on May, 15th, 1886, in Amherst. She never married or had children. Later year, her father died too.
Her sister, Lavinia published her work after she died. They changed her original work because her poems are very unusual and strange. She wrote about nature and the human emotions, so deep from grief and pain to joy. Her famous poem is simple verse: “ I’m nobody, who are you?” Those ideas cause the reader to think about things in a new way. They were all poems of great richness and depth, unlike any poetry that had come before.
I personally love her poems very much. I think her poems are very special. Even English words definitions are easier, but she still can express the deep emotions which makes readers curious about her more and more.
