Reflection on First Semester Orphanage Events

I want to use this time to reflect on the first semester orphanage events.

We definitely achieved learning outcome 3 as a whole. Every event, we diligent meet every week to brainstorm ideas. We’ve naturally find an effective routine of coming up with new ideas, distributing jobs, buying things needed, and setting up meetings for club members. Through this, we’ve figured out the best way to catalog participation and to generate new ideas.

Throughout my previous blog posts, I’ve identified learning outcome 1 and 2, where I reflect on the strengths and weaknesses of the events we’ve planned. Through such reflection, we’ve made several improvements. For example, we realized the effectiveness of preparing cheat sheet. It not only motivates them to remember the vocabularies, but also helps them achieve better results in games. We also learned how to balance outdoor activities with indoor activities. Initially, we planned a lot of activities that requires movement. However, this led to chaos, where kids ran around and didn’t stay at their own stations. So we decided to only plan one outdoor activities at most each event. This turned out really well because we can now regulate order more. Also, since the kids are all looking forward to playing that outdoor game, we would tell them that they should behave in order to play.

After hosting all these events, we understanding the importance of learning outcome 7. We need to be aware of sensitive topics such as family. During thanksgiving theme events, we centered our ideas on eating turkey instead of family reunion.
