Since Halloween is a big holiday, we decided to celebrate it again with the kids. This time, we planned according to the problems we realized from last monthly event.

Teaching vocabulary + decorating paper bag
Last time, in my reflection, I’ve mentioned how students forget the vocabularies they’ve learned easily, because how we did it was only to say the word and tell them to repeat after us. This time, we decide to print out the vocabularies for them. We paste it on the candy bag so when they play games, they will have a cheat sheet. We only have the picture and the English vocabulary on it, so either the student have to know how to read it or they have to use their own way to memorize it. Some students are very creative. They use chinese phonetics to help them remember the pronunciation of the vocabularies. I think this new system is pretty effective because these kids develop their own way to learn and now they actually have something to keep to review or to memorize.
Balloon game
Their candy bag cheat sheet comes in handy in this game. Basically if the kid was participating during our vocabulary teaching, then he or she will have an advantage here. This indirectly encourages them to take notes during our teaching. Anyways, this game involves balloons, which is automatically chaotic. (Kids fight for balloons, throw them around…) But I think we improved this time around. We stationed more helpers in this game. If some kids cannot find a partner, we would partner with them. They seemed to really enjoy playing with us. And when the game ends, we asked them to return all balloons to us before moving on to next station. When we call for discipline, we ask them to line up and sit down. This prevents them from running around. This game, though we knew it would be chaotic, was surprisingly successful.
Card game
This was suppose to be the card game, but we forgot to bring the cards. (smh) So our helpers decided to do charades. I really admire their quick-thinking and creativity. I wasn’t helping in this station, so I didn’t know how it went, but the helpers told me the kids enjoyed it they think it’s funny to see us act.
Hand pressure game
This game was the longest, slowing the overall progression of the cycle. The kids were having difficulty understanding how many times they should apply pressure. What we are glad about is that the kids are actually really compliant and didn’t goof around to squeeze their friend’s hand to death or something equally chaotic. Plus, this game allows them to sit down, which decreases the amount of chaotic energy severely.
We almost ran out of candies. It was a shocker because we literally brought four bags of candy there. Guess we have to design games that do not require that much candy next time. Or maybe we can give them toys instead as awards… Atleast we carried the spirit of trick or treat to them hmmm~
