Grade 10 Language and Literature

Poetry: Figuratively Speaking Unit

In this unit, we learn how poetry can serve as a medium for self-expression and intentional voice. We first looked at famous poetries such as Siren’s Song and Mother to Son, to see how poets use their life experiences as a foundation for their creative and expressive writing. Then, we wrote a series of TIEAs to analyze the poems’ diction imagery, and other literacy and structural devices. For the final product, we create two poems. One is called Personal Poetry, where we free write any topic we want, using techniques and literary device learned from the previous poem analysis. The other one is called Memoir Poem. This is a bit challenging because we had to tell a story using 91 or fewer words. After both poems were done, we had to perform them verbally in front of the class. As for the TIEA portion of the summative, we had to compare two poems on their content, language usage, tone, mood, voice, theme, and structure.
