I believe individuals should not have the right to own guns, especially when they are not in the militia. The Second Amendment stated: “A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.” When the Amendment was created, the founders believe their new country would be an easy target for foreign countries, and that there was wilderness everywhere. They thought people should be able to fend off intruders or animals. The founders were also deeply opposed to a standing army, which they viewed as the first step toward tyranny. Instead, they assume male citizens would all belong to local militias, it was seen as their duty to be at arms. Thus, “the right of the people to keep and bear Arms” was only in reference to military defense. None mentioned any individual rights to bear arms for self-defense, hunting, or any purpose other than joining the militia. In time, America doesn’t need militia for security purpose anymore. In addition, Second Amendment loss its original purpose too.
