I first planned out my designs in my notebook, trying to put down as many designs and different ideas down. I try to make all letters in different shapes, some are spiky like ice, and some are cute and round. I chose the best design and drew it on the
chipboard. It is a challenge to use a xacto knife. When I’m cutting curve lines on the chipboard, I have to use all of my strength in order to cut it down. Furthermore, I need to be aware of the proportions of each alphabet, so they can be balanced. My favorite part of making this project is to color my alphabets. I use a special marker that can squeeze out paint. I add in various textures and patterns to make the alphabets look interesting. Having different values in artworks are really important too. I used a white marker to create colors from dark to light, therefore, the figure looks more 3D. Last, I put the finish alphabets into a sculpture, and make sure it looks good in all angles.
The word I chose for my sculpture is “Pingu”, because penguins are my favorite, and its name is short enough for me to create the project. All of my alphabets designs are related to my topic, penguins. I designed “P” to look like a penguin, giving a fish, which is “I”, to his baby penguin. I applied different style on “N”, which is putting letters on its surface, so it’ll express a cool texture and an idea of “letter on letter”. My “G” is a snowflake, I put a lot of details on the design of snowflakes to decorate my letter. My “U” is an empty egg shell that the penguin is hatched from. This idea was originally being a water tank, but I thought a penguin was hatched from an egg, and eggs look like “U”. As the result, “U” becomes the empty egg shell.
