This is a unit about a magical space: the land of films! We studied how spells (from lighting, music, framing, angle to editing) are use to make the audience feel the way the director wants, and wrote a compare and contrast essay to show what we’ve learned in this fantasy land.

During this unit, I learned several things about movie techniques and new terminologies. I learned about how each technique creates different feelings, for example, high key lighting creates a feeling of warmness, short cuts creates a choppy and tense rhythm, and high angle shot creates a powerless feeling.

Introduction: Background + Accomplishment

The Crucible by Arthur Miller is a play about witchcraft and humanity, a tragedy caused by several reasons. The Crucible by Arthur Miller is what we read and analyzed during this unit.

We understood this play by annotating it with different forms, including book snaps and sketchnotes. These gave us a basic understanding of the plot, character, and theme. We dive deep into this play by writing TIEAs and blog posts on several different topics and characters. This encourages us to think and clear our thoughts on the author’s choices. We show our understand by the DRAMATIC reading, expressing the emotion and feeling of the character. This forced inspired us to put ourselves into the character’s shoes.

Unit 5 Waves–Reflection on Musical Instrument

The hardest part in this summative is trying to make the instrument. We need to come up with a lot of ideas and try our if it works. Some instrument can not make sound that is loud enough, or cannot play a song or five notes. Also, writing the lab report is also hard, because you need to choose the best graph and data table to well represent your datas, if you didn’t, no matter how good your data is, it didn’t help. The easy part of this summative is collecting datas. You just simply play and record the frequency.

A part of this summative is to give feedbacks to other people’s lab report. I think this is very helpful. One, it can help the author of the lab report improve base on what you observe that can get better; two, it can also let you improve. You can read and get the parts that the author did well on and make it to your own stuff and learn from it.

I pass in the five test, I can play a song and five notes and they are all loud enough for the whole class to hear it. The song I played is Mary had a Little Lamp, and it can be recognized. The five note are also clear so the whole class can know what they are and hear it. But some of the note are not really accurate, like the note G, it is a little bit too low. For improvement, I can draw a mark on the part that will play G so very time it will be the same.

The instrument I made is a string instrument, kind of like a guitar with one string. I am inspired by the musical Instrument videos put on classroom. There is a video about wooden diddley bow, and I think it might be easy to make this instrument and using different materials. After I started to create it, I found out that it don’t really work with some materials. The process of making the instrument is hard, but it is really fun when you make your own instrument and play with it.

Unit 3 Work and Machines Reflection

Before we start this unit, I know almost nothing about work and machines. The only thing I know about it that there are simple machines that can help us, but I don’t know how. After this unit, I have learned more about the simple machines.

One major experiment we do in this unit is the inclined plane, which is changing the angle of the inclined plane, and see if distance change, what will happen to the work. For the lab report, I think I can improve on the Criteria Civ, which is commenting on the validity and reliability of your results. I need to explain more.

I like the part about the simple machines, and want to know more about it, because it can help us in real life. I want to know more kinds of simple machine.Also, I want to know the best angle/length of each simple machines, which best mean that using the smallest force.

Our next unit is about energy. Energy is defined as the capacity of a physical system to perform work. It is also a vocabulary we’ve seen in the lsat unit.

GRASP Project Reflection

In this project, we worked in a group of 4, and we can speared the work into four piece. In the presentation, because one of our group mate didn’t come, so we divide the script into 3 parts. I talked about input and output force and real life examples of the inclined plane. My job for writing the lab report was to write the independent and dependent variables, and Cii.

The most challenging part for this project is the time given for the project. Our class started a day later than other classes, but we still need to turn it in for the same time. We try to use our time wisely so we can have more days for writing down the lab report and the presentation.

The part that I enjoy the most in this project is doing the experiment. The tools we used in the experiment is a combo of a pulley and inclined plane. Although it is only a experiment tool, but it is still useful in real life, to lift heavy things up.

For the part that I will remember, I think the part of doing the experiment will be the most memorable. It is very interesting and also important. It is helpful in real life, because it can help us to use less force.

Pattern Design Reflection

Pattern Design Reflection

In this project, we are creating PATTERN by using blue pen. We are drawing it on four different sheet of paper. I was first thinking about having four different theme on each paper, but later I think that maybe Alice in Wonderland will be a good idea for this project, because it is my favorite children’s story. So first, I draw down the tunnel that represent the tree hole that Alice and the rabbit fall in. It make people think that there is a MOVEMENT that is going down. Then, I draw the pattern on the poker, which is spade, heart, diamond and club,  I draw one on each tile to be PROPORTION.  Then, I draw flowers, trees and plant, to show the setting of the story, which is in a fantasy forest, and the trees are drawn in ORGANIC SHAPE.

 

Then, I trace the big ideas with blue pen, and EMPHASIS the big part with bolded LINES. After I trace all the big parts, I found out that the image still look very empty, I add a clover into the center of the image, the SPACE worked just right. To make the image more interesting, I add the VARIETY of pattern, using different SHAPES, including both GEOMETRIC SHAPE and organic shapes. Then I start to add the small details into the  big part, and the first one that I draw is the heart and the flowers. Later, when I was going to draw the next one, I found out that the bottom part is too white, so to be BALANCE, I add the smiling car in Alice in Wonderland. I use different VALUE of COLOR to show that the cat is disappearing.

 

I add many clocks into the tunnel, one to fill up the space, and two to represent the clock that rabbit bring in Alice in Wonderland. Then, when I finish my clocks, I fill up the rest tunnel with dark blue, to emphasis. Lastly, I add patterns into the spade, diamond and club, filling up the space. The pattern that I remember the most is the spider web in the diamond. There are dark and light, and the CONTRAST each other. But the space that I colored have no RHYTHM, there are no rules. Lastly, I add the pattern into the clover in the center. I think that it may be a good idea to make it unity, because there are not too much same things in my art work.

 

Overall, I think the artwork that I make is HARMONY, though there are some different patterns, but the whole theme is the same.

 

I think I can improve on adding more staight line, because I’ve draw a lots of curvy lines. And I want to add more geometric shapes, to make my work more interesting. Also, the white part, or the space is too much. I think I should add some more pattern, to make the picture better. I think the good part that I did is the value.
