The fight for right.

Taiwan is the first country in Asia that have law passed to protect the rights for same sex marriage. In 2017 May, Taiwan’s high court ruled that it is against constitution to ban same sex marriage, this is a hope for LGBT group. For the result, effective before May 24, 2019, same sex couples can wed in a civil ceremony. This big event is recognized throughout the world, with reports from CNN, Japanese Time, and many others.
On the way 🏳️🌈
In 1958, a lesbian couple were trying register for marriage in the court but get rejected. One of them wrote a letter to the court: “My girlfriend and I want to get married, but I am a women, so is she. Can we get married?”. The response is no because it is against the Civil Code.
In 2000, Chi Chia-wei, an activist that fight for LGBT right, apply to the Judicial Yuan for a constitutional interpretation for same sex marriage. After this, there are a lots of people coming up with laws about same sex marriage, but all failed before the law is pass.
In 2013, the draft of the law about diversified family structures was sent into the Legislative Yuan. Finally, it start moving. The road is really hard to walk, there are times that the Legislative Yuan put the draft aside, doubt from society, and pressure from family.
In 2017, in March, a debate from Chi Chia-wei and Taipei City Government were hosted, and in May 24, the court announce that “in violation of both the people’s freedom of marriage as protected by Article 22 and the people’s right to equality as guaranteed by Article 7 of the Constitution.” is against the constitution.

So now, in May 24, 2019, same sex couple can get married and be recognized. But is this the end of the road of right? Of course not. LGBT group still receive peculiar look from people. What we need to do is understand. LGBT is the same as everyone else. They have the right and freedom to love a same sex person, and there are nothing wrong with it.
I saw a Taiwan LGBT Pride this year, although it was just for a minute or so, I hope my heart is with them. I want more people to know, they are the same as everyone else. Even if you don’t like them, please pay RESPECT and be KIND. A recent example is the referenda on marriage equality in November 2018. “Restricting marriage under Civil Code to one man and woman” this is not respecting the LGBT group. Why should marriage be only one man to one woman? You can dislike them, but you CAN’T take their right!
There is hope 🏳️🌈

Although there are some people that still don’t understand them, but people are hopeful. If the society continue to change like this.. There will be a day where everyone, no matter which sexual orientation, can laugh and live with right. There will be a day, that we are all free to speak for ourself and to love. There will be a day, where rain stops, and a rainbow is hanging on the sky like the smile everyone on the land have.
