September CAS (HUEVOS)

Breakfast has always been considered the most essential meal in a day. With that in mind, it leads me to come up with this CAS which is to make a dish of an egg for breakfast. I believe egg is a perfect ingredient for a typical breakfast and I have been researching how to deal with the eggs. There is one video that demonstrates a variety of ways of how to cook an egg and it gives me an idea about making an egg. I decided to make an egg by separating the yolk and the egg white while cooking. I think this is an interesting idea to be tested out because the taste might change from this trial. I will try to do one trial in the following week. Here is the video that inspired me to act in this CAS:

El Blog sobre La Lengua de Spanglish

Viernes , 28 de agosto de 2020

Enrique Sha

First Concert in a Long Time

This Sunday, I was invited to attend a concert with my music instructor. It was great to have this since it is rare that music concerts are still available to be hosted during this pandemic. The concert is on percussion music which played a lot of pieces in marimba and that was probably the main reason I was so passionate to go. There were several familiar pieces played throughout the concert as some of them were popularly played in national competitions. I am glad that I get to use this time on the weekend to attend this concert. It gives me a sense of being once again connected to the music I love throughout my career as a musician and as a person.

August CAS Engagement

I decided to do some practice on my volleyball skills as the sport season is starting again. It has been a long time since the last game I played last year November and it is due to the restriction of the pandemic. I plan to do some basic drills on bumping because that is the most used skills that will be applied as a volleyball player, especially a libero. It is necessary for me to get that sense of “touch” of volleyball which most of athletes do know the feeling of that. It is essential to have that feeling when playing volleyball because it gives you confident and feel more connected to the ball itself. Here is an exemplar video for practicing the basic of volleyball bumping.

Volunteering in Hospital

During this summer, I was also able to do volunteer in a hospital in Tainan for a week. I stayed in the emergency area of the hospital, mainly assisting the nurses and doctors on the patients that need the most urgent care and treatment. To be honest, I was not able to really help anything medically, however, I was still able to help out on things such as moving hospital beds and helping the nurses to take medicine from the pharmacy in the hospital, things that do not necessarily require an advanced level of medical knowledge. It was a busy week, patients were coming in every second. Occasionally, the whole emergency area looks like a place that is in chaos but somehow in order. Nurses were rushing everywhere and asking me to do all kinds of things that I could help within my ability as a high school student. It was a fulfilling week and I learned a lot of stuff in this week. I solidly experience the life of a nurse and we really have to appreciate that each of them is standing on line to fight for everything for the patients. It once again reinforces the importance of medical staff to fight against the coronavirus every single day and to honor them with all the respect.

End-of-Semester CAS 2

Officially done with my junior year and looking forward to my senior year which will also be my final year as a high school student. After then, I will be graduated and everyone will be heading to different places to pursue their unexplored future. This year has been exceptional not just for me individually but for the whole world. Lots of challenges that occurred this year were not faced in the past few years which have set as some significant struggles for people. Students weren’t an exception either. The major coronavirus pandemic has made a major impact on students, especially in academics that disrupt the common agenda that was followed in the past. This causes a major impact on students to adjust themselves in order to face this year’s unique situation. Despite such a rare condition, we, in Taiwan, were still able to operate quite normally compare to other countries, and fortunately, our CAS program is able to continue without the intervention of the pandemic. I am satisfied with my accomplishments to be able to maintain the progress of CAS during this semester and demonstrate the perseverance to be able to sustain in this exclusive situation of this year.

In this semester, I still believe time management is still the biggest task in CAS. Being an IB student requires a lot of dedication into multiple subjects which makes the skill of time management even more significant. Moreover, especially having the TOK presentation being presented for the first-ever closer to the end of the semester, it requires me to dedicate more to this course than ever which I have to manage my time quite differently from there. I am glad that I get to manage my time between CAS and academics just quite all right so that I was able to construct two posts each month that act as pieces of evidence to demonstrate my involvement in CAS each month but also maintains my academic performance in an accepted range.  This semester, I have tried to formulate long-term CAS, for example, the basketball improvement proposal that took me more than 2 months from researching to physically practicing it with my peers in the gym. While looking back into the pieces of evidence for this specific CAS, I feel a strong sense of achievement to be able to progress starting from just researching to actually accomplishing something from my own. I learned to approach things that I have never tried before, in this case, to attempt specific skills that I have not yet done in basketball. I feel thorough to be able to solidly complete a goal that I have attentively managed and planned.

Besides, I have started the CAS project with my partner Simon during the time towards the end of the semester. Our goal of the project is to promote Indoor fitness exercise which has a strong relation to our global world that the pandemic has locked down the majority of places and indoor exercising is one of the best ways to continue working out during this pandemic. The project is still progressing and we will continue to upload our videos to an Instagram account that we have created just for this project. Working on to this point, I think overall we did a great job and we are on track to our progress. The researching part and acting part are done well at this point and we have effectively accomplished things as a team instead of an individual. We communicate well and work collaboratively but also clear about the parts each of us is responsible for. I am confident in looking forward to the product of this project.

Overall, I aimed to maintain a balance of strand in all my CAS but I have to put additional effort into the “service” part of CAS. I will be looking for more opportunities that fulfill the requirement of the service part of CAS in the next year. Other than that, I believe I did a pretty decent job in CAS and in this course. I am very glad to be recognized by the teacher to receive the IBDP TOK award at the end of the year. It is quite surprising for me especially when there are so many talented students in our school each with different impressive talents. Looking forward to more special experiences of TOK in my senior year!

Starting with CAS Project – Indoor Fitness

As summer vacation arrived, Simon and I begin to start out our cooperative CAS project which is about promoting indoor fitness to get exercise going during this worldwide pandemic crisis. We each made videos and post them up on an Instagram account that serve the purpose to promote indoor fitness created by us. I am responsible for the videos about “push-ups” and I decided to make 2 different levels of push up. The first one is the intermediate push up that people normally do for a workout. The second one is an advanced push up that requires a lot more muscles in order to fulfill this push up because it is a “clapping push-ups”. Filming these clips actually uses up more effort than I already thought because I re-film some of the clips to make sure that I am doing it correctly. I did approximately a total of 100 push up just that day which is an amount way beyond what I originally do each day. It was a unique experience and we will be posting more videos in the following weeks. Here are the videos for the 2 different levels push-up I made

Basketball Training

For this continued Basketball experience, I decided to work on my shooting skills in basketball with some of my classmates through a game called “knockout”. This activity requires 2 balls and it can start out from the free-throw line or the 3 point line which we chose to start from the free-throw line. The first person will shot the ball and if the ball goes in, the person passes the ball to the third person. If the person shot the ball and it doesn’t go in, the person has to try to put the ball into the basket as soon as possible. The second person is able to shot the ball after the first person did not shot the ball in and if the ball shot by the second person goes in before the first person, the first person will be eliminated. This activity requires and is able to train on both accuracies and having a quick release which avoids shot-blocking that will be potentially faced in the real game. It is a great experience to be involve in CAS and basketball training.

Fitness Workout List

Continuing on with the fitness work, I decided to create a list of schedules on my fitness workout and I will follow that routine every time I decided to work out. Creating my own schedule of the workout will enable me to have a more efficient performance and workout that specifically focuses on the part that I am attempting to work on. The objective goal of mine in this workout is core muscles which require a lot of abs workout. Thus, I decided to plan the abs workout as the primary necessity of my list of workouts. The plan that I listed is:

  • Torso Rotation x 240 ( Right spin  x 120 / Left spin x 120, 20spin per round)
  • SBE x 120 (Right side x 60 / Left side 60, 20 times per round)
  • Abdominal Crunch x 120 (35kg x 60 / 37.5kg x 60, 20 times per round)
  • V-Crunch x 45 (15 times per round)
  • Push up x 50 (25 times per round)

Portfolio 6 Individual Oral Internal Assessment

For this internal assessment, we have begun practicing some mini-IOs and some practice IOs started from the beginning of this semester. These practices and attempts help me to construct a better final oral internal assessment about the text of ADH and Nike’s advertisement. The global issue that I chose for my final IO is justice, and more specifically about the stereotypical inequality against women in the global society. It is a serious topic that has continued to strike in the society in which the aggressiveness has been slowing down for the last few years due to the rise of voice from the celebrity and more importantly, the women’s voice. Through the assessment, I have connected myself to the global world by promoting the ideas of more equal laws that are set between genders. In ADH, the laws and the situation of society are depicted clearly against women which they lived in a difficult and inferior life compare to men. This idea in the text leads me to the thinking of our world and to how society works from a different point of view. From there, Nike’s Serena William’s advertisement further demonstrate this issue that exists in the society we live in this decade.

These two different texts impacted me from the aspect of freedom. It tells me the value of rights and freedom from living in the country with such liberty. It also informs me of the significance of obtaining personal freedom in society. In this IO, I have prepared myself starting from making a solid outline to a deeper dive into the texts that I will be interpreting. The challenging part is to find the most solid connection with my global issue and it is difficult to memorize every critical point that I would like to explain in the real IO. However, when the points and evidence are found in the text, it will strengthen the persuasiveness of my IO and more importantly the critical concept of my global issue. It is a great experience in my learning career to has the chance to orally explain the text and global issue from my own perspective.
