It has come to an end, a complete ending.

Over this two-year course, we have learned lots of texts in different fields and literary terminologies that I never imagine I will be able to identify/use it in my own work. The class has significantly enhanced my understanding of the English language & literature and push me to another level, especially in formal writings.

A non-literary that I specifically love is Nike’s advertisement. I have never look that deeply into analyzing an ad because most people, like me, neglect these tiny components in life very often. Through this unit, I was able to understand the humor/visual techniques, which I never thought to be an important part of the ad. I found out the “rule of thirds” is one of the most influential techniques used to emphasize messages and ideas in the advertisement because it makes the audience unconditionally focus on the main message of the advertisement without the need for words.

My favorite literary text that we learned is Never Let Me Go. Despite it being fictional, it is a real matter that may happen in the future. The emphasis in portraying the relationship between clones and humans in the text further promotes the debatable issues of technological advancement and ethics. The strong relation between the topic of the text and reality is one factor that I considered to be my favorite literary text learned.

Going into University, I believe the writing skills that I acquired from this course in writing comprehensive and solid essays will be significant to my further studies in university. The structure of a solid essay will always be in my mind to help me construct even better essays in the future. The global issue that I would be further discussed is discrimination towards Asians. This got even worse during the pandemic and I hope I can become the person that people respect based on my achievements or accomplishments in the future.

Here are samples of works that I accomplished throughout the course:

Taroko Sports Batting Cages Experience

In this month(March), I am a little overwhelmed by the workload from school, especially from the numbers of IAs that we need to turn in. Because of that, I want to find something that can distract me from all the works for a short break, and I decided to go try baseball, hoping to release some stress out of it. I went to the Taroko sports batting stadium, which is a place to practice hitting the baseball. It was pretty hard at first, to follow through and hit the ball. I had some missed swings at first, but get to manage it quite well after more practices. After trying the practice for 80/km, I took a further step to try for 100/km. I found out that it is important to follow the ball and watch the ball for the entire swinging motion once the speed of the ball got even faster. Only by following the ball thoroughly can allow you to solidly hit a “contact” ball. I am delighted that I made this choice to come here, to take a break from life, so I get to reset myself and ready to go again. Here’s a short clip about this experience.

2-People Yoga

Our school has several activities regarding houses competition this month, one of which is doing yoga with another person with a specific pose. I have never done yoga with another person before, so this is quite new to me. There are some poses that can earn more points than the other poses, which points are depending on the level of difficulty to do the pose. I participated in this activity to earn some points for my HOUSE OF HELIANTHUS. I tried to do as many poses as I can with my partner, and some of them are really difficult. I found out that each pose has its own importance in focusing on stretching a specific area of our body, and this is pretty nice especially for student-athletes like me. Having a sufficient amount of stretching and yoga can allow our performance to maintain a competitive level and not letting our muscles stay too tight. Overall, I found out how 2-people yoga can be a good idea in stretching, which can also be applied after my volleyball practices. It was a great experience to know this type of yoga while also being able to contribute myself to the house I am in.

Volleyball Team Fitness Workout During Break

During the short break, everyone was supposed to take a break from everything and just relax and enjoy the holiday. However, as it is still in the volleyball season, I believe we cannot just relax for such a long time. Therefore, I came up with the proposal to do certain fitness workouts every single day during the break to maintain our conditions and muscle strength to my volleyball teammates. I plan to do 100 x core muscles and 100 x back muscles as these are the essential muscles used in playing volleyball. I asked my teammates to record theirs every day as well so that I can keep track of whether everyone actually did it or not. Despite the overall might not be evident, I believe these workouts definitely help us to keep in shape in season, to ultimately contributing to our ultimate goal: TISSA Championship. Here are some short clips of the workout my teammates and I recorded during the break:

Traditional Chinese Culture Vs. Global Warming Crisis

As Chinese New Year is arriving soon, my family has once again started planning on following the traditional Chinese culture to worship our ancestors, which is to “burnt the joss paper-money”. However, I have always acknowledged the detrimental damage of this ritual to the air and causing even more severe air pollution problems.  So, this year I decided to step up for this problem but also keeping a balance to respect the Chinese culture we preserved. To do that, I propose the idea to buy a lesser amount of paper money, which still preserves the idea and symbolic representation to worship our ancestors but really decreases the carbon dioxide and other toxins produced through this ritual. My parents have acknowledged my effort in saving the planet environmentally and agreed to do it this year.

I believe if more people are willing to do this, we will be able to really take a step forward in saving the world that was once a utopia.  Making this choice in balancing our traditions and to the world show our action in responsible for our action, which fulfills and complete not just the traditional forms of life, but also life with ethics involved.

Playing Popular Song in Marimba

Recently, I have heard a new song from youtube that I personally think is very fascinating. I really like the lyrics and the overall mood created within. A while after, I suddenly have an innovative idea to play this song on marimba. I think it would be special as I don’t think anyone has played this song on marimba before. Most people played this song on the piano as there are versions specifically for piano versions. However, I decided to use the piano version music sheet on marimba as the structure of the piano and the marimba is the same by having the # and b on the upper section and the normal notes on the lower section. I have asked my music teacher to play the song with me as the music sheet is separated into the right hand and left hand based on the piano version. I will be playing the main melody of the song and my teacher will be playing the accompanying part. Here is the video of the song “過客” played in marimba:

The Severity of Covid-19: “Taiwan can help” then “I can help”!

As the novel coronavirus continues to ravage the world, I, personally, have begun to think more deeply as if there will be an end to it if the number of cases never has the trend of going down. Despite living in a relatively much safer environment compared to many other regions in the world, as one of the global citizens, I believe I have the duty to make an effort to this global issue even though my contribution might be minor to the overall circumstances.

The reason that Taiwan is a role model in combating coronavirus is mainly because of the major effort that all the health workers have put in during this period of time. With that being said, I would like to put an effort into giving a safer and more comprehensive environment to the health workers in Taiwan. After some research on the internet, I found an organization called “Give2Asia” and they have a specific program in supporting the frontline health workers and institutions responding to the coronavirus pandemic.

I would be supporting the program through donations that are accessible on the website. Moreover, I have put the link in my personal social media account, hoping that my friends can join me to support this program in an effort to combating the coronavirus pandemic as one of the global citizens on this planet.

Representations of History and Memory Reflection

In this unit, we discussed the topic of representations of history and memory with respect to global issues around the world. Viewing the documentary: 13th, I discovered the hidden secret regarding the history of the United States. I think the most resonating scene is the comparison between the world map and the US and emphasizing the comparison by saying the 25% of the prisoners are in the US while the US just only stood as a small portion of the world. It emphasizes the severity of the US regarding security and the land of free.  The idea of racial discrimination and injustice toward people of color, then, is introduced through mass incarceration in the documentary. Inequality presented that against people of color is also highlighted through the evidence backed up by real-life examples and personal experiences which leads us to really discuss deeper into this continued racial discrimination process after the slavery era, just in another way.

We, then, have been introduced to the articles written by Michelle Alexander, specifically in the form of an op-ed. Michelle Alexander expresses her arguments about racial discrimination, violence, and corruption in the articles respectively.  I found the article named “Reckoning with Violence” the most attractive as it talks about how prison might not be the best way to sanction people with crime and preserve peace in the world. The article mentioned that the alternatives of prisons including mental therapies, restoration, and building bonds with communities are better choices than prison. Alexander believed that the way prison operates will only cause more tensions and hatred between people, ultimately worsening the situation regarding violence and peace.

If I were to write an op-ed, I would be writing about a current issue that is significantly affecting the way the world operates and is detrimentally doing so. With that in mind, I would like to write about injustice and discrimination specifically toward Asians and people wearing masks. It is a very serious issue as our health are depending on it. In many places, some tend to discriminate against people who wear masks and claim them to be wrong or sick. Most of the people being criticized through this are Asians and this has caused them to feel discriminated especially in Western countries, which they shouldn’t deserve to be treated like that by doing the right thing to protect not just his/herself health but the entire population. It is a severe issue because the way we combat the covid-19 pandemic is significantly important, and wearing masks is probably the best way to do so. Discriminating people wearing masks, then, become a serious issue that should get attention globally, and it would be a strong topic that I can write about with my op-ed especially relating this unit to the current event happening around the world.

Division-II High School Volleyball League Experience

In the last year of my high school volleyball career, my coaches and the athletic director were able to make it possible for the team and me to join the local division volleyball league and compete with even more challenging teams from the local schools. In the past, our school only joined the tournaments that are specifically hosted for all the international schools in Taiwan and East Asia. We didn’t really have the chance to officially compete with the local teams. I am grateful that I am able to experience it before I graduated from high school.

Despite we were not able to advance to the next round, I solidly believe I have learned a lot that cannot be learned otherwise if I didn’t get to play in this kind of tournament. Since I am the “only” person that stood as a libero in our team, this trip has been so significant as I was able to see where I could have done better or where I can still improve based on the outstanding performance from the liberos of the other teams in the tournament. Two specific improvements that I can verbally state are having better pacing and better positioning especially on receiving serves and spikes with no blockers. Other improvements are more leaning toward mentally and having that sort of “feeling” and “sense” that are not really expressible through words. Overall, it was an amazing experience that allows me to better understand the improvements I can make to better prepare for the upcoming TISSA tournament and season.

Reflection: “A Time to Break the Silence on…”

In this unit, we see several activists promoting rights that they believe are either  undermined or neglected in the society. They use their voice both verbally and literally to make impact to convey ideas to audience about reasons and determination on their topics. For me, I would probably write about any related topics about injustice presents in this society which this can be in social classes, hierarchies, inferiority of certain groups and gender. I believe it is essential to voice up for those that face injustice when those injustice should never exist in the society. I hope to provide several real-life example that really happened in the past or still happening to emphasize the necessity of such changing is needed in this society.

The rhetorical appeals I will be using is probably pathos, which is appeals to emotions. I believe emotions is a huge part on tying audience’s attention to the targeted topics. If audience do really perceive the message with emotions, they will more likely to act on it and have the consciousness to wanting to solve it which their actions. The literary devices that I will use is anaphora, which is repeating the same word or phrase at the beginning of consecutive sentences. I think it is very strong to repeat the same idea over and over again to emphasize the main idea of the text. I will be looking deeper into this in the following week…
