Matter Unit
Students had a great time during the matter unit while we did small experiments in class. This is a video we made about Physical and Chemical Change. We used the popular Youtube video – PPAP Song, “I have an apple, I have a pen…..” – during this experiment when learning about physical and chemical changes […]
Building Molecules
In science students were learning about molecules. They got to build different molecules. We also used an APP on the iPad called Nova Elements in which they could explore more about how atoms are formed.
Atoms and Molecules of Matter
We have been learning about matter in science. At the moment we are learning how different atoms can join together to make molecules which make up all matter. Bill Nye is here explaining the basics of matter: liquid, solid, and gas – the 3 main states of matter.
Matter Vocabulary
Now we will begin to learn about MATTER. Below is the vocabulary needed in this unit. Students can also look in the Grade 5C Shared Things folder under Science > Matter to find more information and activities for this unit.
The Scientific Method
Our class just finished learning about the scientific method – the way scientists gather data to prove a hypothesis or to find out new information about something. The students created posters to show their understanding of this process. Here are a few examples:
How does a compass work?
Today the students used the scientific method to inquire about how a compass works. Here is the experiment we used: Here is an interesting video explaining that Earth is a giant magnet! One more video. It’s quite interesting about the ancient Chinese Compass:
The Scientific Method
Students have been reviewing the Scientific Method.
