In science class, we did experiments about candy. Students used a simple concept to practice setting up independent, dependent and controlled variables in an experiment. We did the following experiment together as a class: After we did this experiment for several days, students were then asked to come up with their own candy experiment. Below […]

Candy Investigations
Students were given a specific task in which they planned and designed an experiment with candy in class. Then, they needed to actually set up and do the experiment at home where they would then record their observations and analyze their results. Students wrote lab reports and also presented their findings to the class.
Science Safety Contract
This was our first post in science class. Below you can see our Safety Contract. It was fun because we learned how to add our digital signature to a document. You can see my contract below:
Assessment Objectives in Science
These are the 4 Assessment Objectives in Science. This means that students will be assessed in these four areas. You can see the full assessment rubrics in the MYP section of this blog.
First Science Project of the Year
Students and designing and conducting their own scientific investigation using the scientific method. They must concentrate on the the THREE VARIABLES of science investigations: 1. What is the independent variable? (the variable that changes) 2. What is the dependent variable that will be measured? 3. What is the controlled variable? (the variable that does not […]
Learning to Use the Scientific Method
At the moment Grade 6 students are reviewing the Scientific Method as we do short investigations with candy inside the classroom. Students also need to review the 3 variables in science. We will concentrate on understanding these variables as the students set up their own investigations with candy.
Tiger Sharks: Are they really MONSTERS of the ocean?
This is a short documentary about Mike Coots and tiger sharks. Mike Coots is a surfer and he lost his leg to a tiger shark when he was 18 years old. Now he is a shark advocate and photographer. He fights for the protection of our sharks and our oceans. This video is only about […]

Information Book
In class the students researched different ocean ecosystems and then created an information book with all of the ecosystems together. This an example of the Intertidal Zone ecosystem written by Lea, Zoe and Sally. The cover was drawn by Lea:
