New Fish #PlanetOrPlastic

This is a poem I wrote for the #PlanetOrPlastic contest on Wattpad and National Geographic.

I want new fish to fish today
I’m sitting by the bay.
The clouds are gray and far away
My task is underway.

I wish for carp to come on out
Or even speckled trout
I quickly see there are no fish
But soon I spot a different dish

The jellyfish I wanted
Made me slightly daunted.
I thought they’d many stingers
Not four legs tied together.
Still, it freely swims the salty sea
With not a wish to flee.

The next I caught was also not
Exactly what I thought.

I didn’t know that sea snakes
Could make themselves so straight.
Lines of green run in-between
I wonder what they mean.
I think they last ate long ago
Their figures are so hollow.

I start to feel a little scared
I’m very unprepared.

Then came the mighty turtle
That went through many hurdles.
Its shell contained a rounded gap
That’s covered with a cap.

I found no fish to fish today
I don’t think I will stay.
For what I found weren’t fish or prey
But human disarray.

There Are No Stars

I just made this really depressing poem and I just wanted to share this depression with y’all 😉

There Are No Stars
by Claire

I strain my eyes against the smoke
I struggle against a woeful croak
Factories and cars are immense cigars
and that is why today there are no stars

Generations before spoke of a sparkling sky
But now the constellations are not nigh
The gift of Artemis has been blotted out by our faults
Only under the dim gray moon we can waltz

Soon there will be no moon

As you can see, I’d have a heart attack if you rip a clean sheet of paper in front of me. So don’t do that unless you want to be responsible for my seizure.

Where I’m From Poem

I am from tomes, dictionaries, and paperbacks
from plants, instruments, and unhealthy snacks
I am from a house full of fun
Where there’s laundry that’s just never done
Where toys are scattered all around the floor
and a single dart board hangs on my door
I am from the flowers my mom planted outside our home
so bright and beautiful countless bugs roam

I’m from the fireworks that light the sky on New Year’s Day
and all the joss paper we burn away
I am from the hard-working and intelligent
from the irritating and the lazy
From kind and generous Ya-Li
to hard-worker Chung-Yi
From be yourself both night and day
to work so you can play

From my mom’s side they have Taoism
and for my dad’s there’s no religion
I’m from Richmond and the island surrounded by sea
From cheeseburgers, milk, and oolong tea
I’m from the time my brother got lost in the mall
from the finger he broke in a painful fall
I’m from the thick glasses my father wears
and the food he brings that he always shares

Made Like No Other

For our assignment, we took slogans from companies and put them together into a poem. We had to put them in an order so that they made sense and sounded good. Then we read it out loud to the class with our partner.

MADE LIKE NO OTHER

You aren’t you when you’re hungry
Where the clothes last for 21 hours
When there is no tomorrow
Look, smell, listen, feel and taste, that’s what Godiva chocolate is all about
As safe as in mother’s hands
You don’t just eat ‘em
Buy it, sell it, love it
Buy it, make it, mix it, rock it
Made like no other
See the world, feed the world, share with the world

Figurative Language Video

Here is our Figurative Language Video. 🙂

I’ve learned about how poetic devices such as similes and metaphors make the song much more fun and cool to listen or sing to. It also makes it sound better. It shows instead of tells, which makes it much more enjoyable and less boring. Music isn’t all about the melody, the lyrics are supposed to say something too, and poetic devices helps make music have a secret meaning.

Be My Valentine!

Tomboy Mandy Moore
Had a crush on the boy next door
So at school she grabbed his collar
and went a bit higher than a hollar
“Hey You! Be mine!
Be my valentine!”
She scared him off
“What did I do?” she did scoff

The very next day, again she tried
She grabbed his shoulders and cried
“Hey you! Carson Dine!
Be my valentine!”
Terrified, he ran away
“What did I do?” she did say
Throughout the day, she wondered what will she say

She waited for him at class
Where she knew that he would pass
“Please Carson Dine
will you be my valentine?”
This time, he did not quiver,
instead he smiled as wide as a river
“Of course my queen
you’re the prettiest girl I’ve ever seen.”
